Comments: As is everything else you do, this homepage is a most exemplary example.(Hm,is that redundant?)How do you DO that? I was given my nickname by Andre' Mossotti, a bassist I worked with in CoalKitchen. He heard me get some strange sounds using a Gretch Tone Divider combined with a whaa whaa pedal and out of the blue he called me Doctor Sax. He had been reading a Jack Kerouak novel in which a ghost appeared in a charactor's dream. The ghost's name was Doctor Sax.
I used to gig in the Chicago area in the early 70's in bands called Big Muddy and Diamond. We did Chicago and BS&T covers mostly. I live in Jackson Tn now and gig out with Carl Perkins occasionaly and I have my own band called the Classics. We mostly do weddings, and private parties. We play 60's, 70's and contemporary Country. For bookings call...(just kidding)
I play soprano, alto, tenor, all Mark VI's. Dukoff/tenor, Brilhardt/alto, Yanagasawi(sp?) on soprano. All horns are roughly 70-71 vintage.

Yes a little birdie named Ralph "Dr. Sax" Thomas told me you had updated your page and links. Now I know what you look like. Ralph and I used to play together in "Coalkitchen", "Midland Villagers", "Heavy Water", "Zoo" and a couple others whose names are lost to the ages. I play tenor (also a Selmer Mark VI 1972 model), flute and alto flute, CASIO DH100 digital horn and sing and play rhythm instruments for "St. Stephen's Blues" (a Dead, Dylan, hippie type music band), "Four on the Floor" (an old rock band), "Mr. Wonderful and the Magdaddies", (a swing/jazz/blues/bop type band), "Southern Swing" (a country/swing band), & "Harley Hicks" (another country/swing band). I'll be visiting Jackson this summer to attend Ralph and Carol's anniversary/Coalkitchen reunion. I'll come check out your store. Maybe I'll even buy something.
Remember: stop unnecessary Sax and Violins on television.

on a professional level or anything though. My brother on the
other hand is extremely good!
If you have the time, maybe you could give me a little advice
on a sax to buy. My brother is a big Selmer fan, he owns 2, he
also has a Japanese soprano (not sure of it's name, I always call
it the Yamagoochi) He lives by these horns. I on the other hand
can't see spending THAT MUCH money just now. What would you say
would be the next best buy? or... should I keep saving for a
Selmer?

I hate to admit that I *know* the true identity of the
"Sax Doctor." Gerald McGuire, aka "Sax Doctor", has spent
his life showing others the deep love he has for music.

Along the way he has always offered advice, a smile, and
a joke or two. After realizing that he was not cut out to
be a stand-up comedian, Gerald entered into the repair biz.

I have had the honour to play in a couple of bands with the
Sax Doctor a couple of years ago at JSSC. He is one cool
dude and a good guy to know when your horn "farts" instead
of "toots."

I'm just a casual player. I bought an alto Bundy II for
starters to see if I would enjoy the saxophone.

I really do enjoy it, but I'm missing a few keys, since it's
only a student model.

Comments: I am a retired Air Force saxophonist (flute, pic, & clarinet,
too). My Alto & Tenor are early Conn horns, both gold-plated
and both with custom engraving. My tenor is a "Chu Berry"
type (circa 1928) and my alto is a 7M (circa 1932. I love the
horns and have played them for many years. Both are "like
new" (no dents, etc). I also own a Mk VI Selmer Bari (low
Bb model) which plays GREAT but the original lacquer is pretty
funky. I also own a couple of flutes, couple of piccolos,
and an early Buffet clarinet (the thumb key mechanism wraps
around the body to a hole in the top of the body). Obviously
I'm into "old" horns. I like their resonance and the ambience
of playing a horn that has a lot of "experience" :-)

the background right now, and always. I only play in the local
Junior College Jazz Ensemble now but at least it's once a week.
I bought a Mark VI Selmer in 1968 for $375 from a Fireman who
just couldn't get it. I'll check the number and then use your
suggestion to see how old it is.
Famous muscians: Played with Clark Terry last year with our group
Played with Pete Crislieb(sp?) in college. He
was the hot tenor player on the tonight show
back during the Carson era.
Meet Carmen MacRae in the green room after our
band started off the Concord Jazz Festival,probably
5yrs ago.
Meet Don Ellis, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman after we
finished our gig on stage at different jazz festivals.
I grew up with Grant Gissman, a guitar player that made
later with Chuck Mangione, and is still hot down in LA
I could go on but it already sounds like I'm name dropping
but I've been very lucky to have such great exposure to
music, professionals, educators, people.
I quit for maybe 6 months because of my real job but there was just something
missing in my life and I quickly found someplace to play. Don't ever stop
listening, playing, reading music. I've got two daughters 8 and 10 that are
already doing the piano gig, and the 10 year old is 1/2yr into clarinet. I self
taught myself piano, so the're already ahead of me. I had no family influence, no
other music talent in the family, but my kids still get to see me perform and
sit with them on the piano. Maybe the'll be able to achieve that next level that
could never reach. Think Jazz-all day long!!!!!!!!!!!

for 1 or 2 years more (I'm French), where you can find some very good jazzmen (the saxofonist
Ernest Wiehe, good pianists...). I play saxo since 25 years, but I'm not professional. I have
a tenor (CONN), an alto (yamaha), a soprano, a flute (Yamaha : I have other one ARTLEY very good
but I can't repair some failures), some clarinets (A good Selmer Jazz). I use Midi Files (I have
a lot of Standard Midi Files, and some ones personals or from friends): it's for me the only way
to make exercise. Generaly I play with jazz friends one or two times a month. Welcome to anybody

I recently graduated from Duke University with a degree in engineering, and I am now in Birmingham. My sax teacher was Paul Jeffery who played with Monk for a while.
Playing with Paul was one of the best times in my life so far. He really taught me a love for the music and a lot of the cats we played with were smoking.

but I come from the Boston area, and Emilio Lyons, whom you
briefly mentioned, works on my horn, a Selmer Mark VII, for
me. I'm wondering if you were aware that Emilio has been
referred to as the"Sax Doctor" for years. Anyway, he is a
master who has repaired horns for all the great ones. If
have never contacted him, I highly recommend that you do so
at Rayburn Music Co. in Boston.
