The Samoan Fire Sword is a relatively contemporary fire art. The art began in 1946 with a towel wrapped over a sword, dipped in white gas. It was invented by Freddie Letult while performing in a cultural festival in San Francisco California. This art, surprisingly, spread quickly throughout Samoa, inspiring traditions as it went. It is a lesser known art; however, there is a yearly competition: The American Samoa World Fireknife Competition. This art is gaining attention worldwide, and has been featured in several movies.
