Let's Get Started
Surveying the materials, and setting a construction plan. Bill, Kevin and Greg start sorting the materials |
Master Builder Mike
Mike starts to do a little "ciphering" to make sure everything is "just so" |
Friends Who Lent a Hand
On the first day of the project, a few friends stopped over to lend a hand |
Splash Deck Sections
The plan called for 18 sections to be built to complete the splash deck |
Laying Out The Blocks For the Splash deck
– Laying the blocks. You will notice I have a small retaining wall around the south side of the pool. The land was not level, so it had to be excavated to install the pool. This was not a problem, as the Dek Blocks sat on top real nice, and this side of the deck is just as sturdy as the rest of the deck

Pre Placing the Sections
The splash deck sections were pre-placed to make sure they will fit just right |

4x4 Support Beams

Starting to Place the Supports
Dick and Greg seem to be wondering "You said there will be how many of these to install?"

4x4 Supports being Placed

Splash Deck Sections Being Installed

Support Braces
Per the plans, the support braces are installed. It is unbelievable how much this solidified the deck. |

Manufacturing the Deck Boards for the Splash Deck
I used 2x6 stock lumber for the deck boards; I used a router to round off each edge to ensure a real nice finished appearance. John is assisting Mike in this shot. |
Deck Board Angle Cuts
When we came to a section joint. The boards had to be cut at an angle to be flush with the next section. |

Detail Work
Each board was marked and cut, then routered, to conform to the coping of the pool. This was very detailed, but well worth it at the end |

Precision trimming of the overhanging deckboards
Note that the blade of the saw was set to precisely match the depth of the wood so as not to "ding" the facia boards |

The Ladder was Installed
At no time during the course of constucting the deck, was the pool unusable. I took the existing full size ladder, and cut it down and mounted it to the deck. I made it removable so as to make it easy come close time. I live in Wisconsin, so this is a must. |

4x4 posts being placed
You will notice the laser level in the corner. Once the 4x4's were placed, we "shot" a line and marked each one to the exact size we wanted, then cut them to size |
More 4x4 Placement
Placing the 4’ 4x4 supports. This was a huge time saver. “Cut the 4x4’s to level, and don’t worry too much about the blocks” |
Joists are attached to the 4x4 supports
Attaching the joists. You will also notice that I put a shovel full of sand under each block; this made it easier to “nudge” them plumb if necessary. |

Support braces were installed around the perimeter of the main deck. This made it "rock solid" |

Skimmer Basket Solution

Detail Corner Work
Scott lent a hand in deckboard installation. Every hole was pre drilled and each screw was counter sunk. This added a nice finished appearance in combination with the routered edges of the boards. |

From Scratch
Manufacturing and installing the stairs. The stringers were manually cut from a 2x12 and I used 2 - 2x6’s for the treads. Each outside edge was routered smooth. |
Stairs!
Finished stair access. I placed a few patio blocks at the base to make it look nice. |

Detail, Detail, Detail
Note the detail of the railing. The time is well worth it. |

Benches
I added a bench at each corner by modifying the existing plans just a little. |
