Instruction for Reverse Applique

Material list:
Tissue paper
Soft lead pencil
Sharp bent handle applique scissors
Straight pins
Muslin or other thin fabric for foundation
Scraps or fat quarters of a variety of fabrics
thread to match all fabric
Step 1: Trace pattern (coloring books, applique patterns, etc) onto tissue paper with a soft lead pencil
or fine point felt pen.
Pin pattern to foundation block (muslin, etc).

Step 2: Turn foundation block over and pin first fabric (background - i.e. sky)
wrong side to right side of foundation.

Hold to light to make sure that the area to be stitched is totally covered.
Step 3: With tissue side up, place under sewing machine and straight stitch along the line that
separates sky from ground.

Step 4: Remove from machine and turn over. With sharp scissors, trim excess close to stitching line.

Step 5: Place next fabric piece (i.e.: ground) on block and pin wrong side to right side of foundation.

Step 6: Repeat above steps with all details on block, until every piece is straight stitched onto the foundation.

Step 7: Matching thread color to individual piece color, set a fine, close zig-zag stitch
and top stitch around each piece.

Step 8: Continue changing thread color and top stitching until all pieces have been stitched.

Step 9: Finish any detail work (i.e.: eyes, flower stems, etc.) by hand or machine, trim all threads
and remove tissue paper from back.

Repeat all steps for each block.
