The Shambhala Buddhist Meditation Group of Southwest Michigan meets at 1611 Centre Ave., Suite 208, in Portage, Michigan and hosts an ongoing weekly class, along with day-long and half-day introductory programs, Shambhala Training Heart of Warriorship programs, group practice days (nyinthun), and contemplative art programs.
The core practice of Shambhala is mindfulness-awareness meditation. This meditation practice enables us to look precisely at our state of mind, moment by moment. By not manipulating or altering our experience, we truly make friends with ourselves as we are, unconditionally. From that, we develop natural openness and genuine compassion towards ourselves and our world.
"In essence, the emphasis of the Buddhist path is to help us attain enlightenment, and the emphasis of the Shambhala path is to help us create and maintain a good society. When we put these two together, we have the Shambhalian Buddhist view of enlightened society." — Sakyong Mipham
