Sixers sock Plover

Although the skies were clear, it was raining baseballs over Leo "Cub" Mancheski Field on Thursday night.
The Stevens Point and Plover American Legion teams combined for 31 hits as Point's Sixers beat the visiting Black Sox 14-10 to hand them their first loss of the season.

Entering the matchup between the two close rivals, Stevens Point (4-3) coach Brad Wysocki had two predictions on what the outcome would be.

"I figured it was going to be a 2-1 game or this," he said. "It's always close, but I knew it was going to be one or the other. Tonight, it happened to be on the high end of the scoring."

The Sixers scored in each of their first seven frames, but Plover (6-1) did not surrender without a fight. Trailing by six after six innings, the Black Sox mounted a ferocious five-run rally, highlighted by a two-run home run from Joel Hojnacki, to cut the Sixers' lead to 11-10.

"We didn't give up, that's for sure," Plover coach Wayne Sankey said. "We couldn't put a zero on the board for them until the eighth inning. If we give them a couple zeroes, we are going to keep hitting. That is the way it's going to go for us."
Stevens Point pitcher Matt Simonson shook off a rough start and was able to hold Plover in check. After allowing two runs in the first and a leadoff homer by Wes Sutton in the second, Simonson forced the Black Sox to either ground out or pop up in 10 of the next 12 at-bats.

Sankey could see his pitchers were unable to gain an advantage on the hill.

"Our guys were constantly behind the hitters, and that's why they are going to hit hard if we have to lay the pitch right there," he said. "We need to throw strikes early on in the count to be effective.

"I knew that both teams could hit well, but I just thought that the pitching was going to be a lot better than it was."
The bottom of the order shined for the Sixers as No. 8 hitter Adam Macht and No. 9 hitter Kyle Eckendorf each crushed a home run.

"That's just unexpected. I had no plans for that to happen," Wysocki said. "When we get the bottom of the order hitting well, that takes a lot of pressure off of the top of the order, which we knew could hit."
Both teams host La Crosse in their next games. Plover takes them on at Memorial Park at 6 p.m. today while Stevens Point hosts them at Bukolt Park at 1 p.m. Saturday.
