Favre Dominates Packers Again

For the second time in less than a month, Brett Favre sliced up his former team and stuck it to the franchise that cast him aside as the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers 38-26 at Lambeau Field. Despite being jeered repeatedly by Packers fans who once cheered his every move, Favre completed 17 of 28 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.

The Vikings (7-1) took a firm hold on the NFC North standings. The Vikings’ defense roughed up Favre’s successor, Aaron Rodgers, sacking him six times.

Freshman Joers Wins WIAA D1 Golf

Waukesha golfer Emily Joers became the first freshman to win the WIAA Division 1 girls golf tournament. Joers drilled a 15-foot birdie putt into the back of the cup, and moments later learned she was the WIAA Division 1 girls state golf champion.

Joers entered the second and final round in a tie for fifth place, but she fired a 1-under-par 71 to finish at 150, two shots better than Madison East's Alex Douglas. Joers, who had 43 putts in her first round, needed just 31 this time. She hit 14 greens in regulation and birdied four of the five par-5s.

Favre and Vikings Beat Packers in Metrodome

It took Brett Favre 19 seasons in the NFL to accomplish something no other player has ever done. He had defeated the other 31 NFL teams before and only one remained. His former team, the team he played with for 16 years, won a Super Bowl championship and three NFL MVP awards. In his first try to beat his former team he did it.

In a pressure-cooker environment inside the Metrodome, having switched this season to the Minnesota Vikings and in his 19th year in the NFL, Favre got his first shot at team No. 32. Chalk up another incredible record for Favre, as he came away on top, leading the Vikings to a 30-23 victory over the Green Bay Packers. He also delivered exactly what the Vikings needed, completing 24 of 31 passes for 271 yards, three touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 135.3.

Badgers Beat Gophers at TCF Stadium

The 119th meeting between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Minnesota Gophers was played in the brand new TCF Bank Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 50,805, but the result was typical of previous years.

The Badgers held on for a 31-28 win. The partisan Minnesota crowd saw UW (5-0, 2-0) and the Gophers (3-2, 1-1) combine for five touchdowns in the final 19 minutes 33 seconds. The Badgers didn't secure their sixth consecutive victory in this series until defensive end O'Brien Schofield sacked Minnesota quarterback Adam Weber and linebacker Chris Borland recovered the fumble at the Gophers' 24 with 30 seconds left.

UW rode the running of John Clay (32 carries, 184 yards, three touchdowns), to hold on for the victory.

Stricker Wins Deutsche Bank

Steve Stricker can build a strong case for the Deutsche Bank Championship as the biggest victory of his career. It was his first win with Tiger Woods in the tournament. His third victory of the season moved him up to a career-high No. 2 in the world ranking.

And he replaced Woods atop the FedEx Cup standings. In a wild Labor Day finish on the TPC Boston, where a half-dozen players came to the par-5 18th hole with hopes of winning, Stricker finished with back-to-back birdies for a 4-under 67 and a one-shot victory.

Because the points are reset after next week in Chicago, Stricker is assured of being no worse than the No. 2 seed in the Tour Championship with a chance to win the $10 million prize.

Prince Fielder Wins Home Run Derby

Prince Fielder became the first Milwaukee Brewer to win the Home Run Derby topping former minor-league teammate Nelson Cruz in the championship round at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Fielder socked his sixth home run of the final round, topping the total of five by Cruz, who went first.

The two players with the highest cumulative totals through two rounds advanced to the final. Fielder hit six in the second round to total 17 and Cruz added five more to reach 16. Fielder matched Cruz's total of five with only four "outs" on the board but made three more "outs" before crushing his no-doubter for No. 6.

The closest any Brewer had come to winning the Derby in the past was Jeromy Burnitz, the runner-up to Ken Griffey Jr. in 1999 in Boston.
