Sheets Starts All Star Game for National League

Brewers right-hander Ben Sheets became the second pitcher from a Milwaukee team to start in the All-Star Game. Milwaukee Braves lefty Warren Spahn started in 1958 and 1961. Sheets threw 42 pitches, 24 for strikes, during his two scoreless innings. The American League rallied for a victory scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 15th for a 4-3 win.

UW Eau Claire Downs UW Whitewater for Softball Title

The UW Eau Claire softball team beat conference rival UW Whitewater in Salem, Virginia to win the NCAA Division III Championship. After being down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, the Blugolds turned it up a notch to force extra innings, and defeated the Warhawks 4-3 in nine innings with a walk-off home run by senior Jill Janke.

The matchup between the Blugolds and Warhawks represented the third time in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history two schools met for a national championship - in any sport - and the first-ever meeting between two league opponents for the national title in softball.  The Blugolds end their season with a 36-11 record, while Whitewater fell to 39-11.

North and Watson Are Legends of the Legends

Andy North and Tom Watson teamed for a better-ball 64 at The Club at Savannah Harbor for a 31-under 185 total edging Craig Stadler and Jeff Sluman by a stroke in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf. North earned $225,000 for his share of this win. This was North's first win-or share of a win-since the 1985 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills.

To get into the Legends Division, North was one of four who needed a sponsor exemption. North, who has had 11 operations for various injuries, spends most of his time doing television work for ABC and ESPN. Being part of the winning team now makes North exempt, but he doesn't expect to use his new playing privileges. The PGA Tour's intrepid stats crew figured it was 22 years, 10 months, 11 days since North's last win.

Green Knights Set History in Capturing Hockey Title

The St. Norbert College ice hockey team claimed its first national championship with a 2-0 win over Plattsburgh State University at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York. The Green Knights became the first team in NCAA Division III history to post shutouts in both games in the NCAA Frozen Four. St. Norbert finished the year 27-1-4, becoming just the third team in NCAA Division III history to finish a season with just one loss – and the first one-loss team to win a national championship. The Green Knights will also carry a 29-game unbeaten streak into the 2008-09 season. St. Norbert head coach Tim Coghlin became the first person in NCAA Division III history to play on and coach a national men’s ice hockey champion. Coghlin was the captain of UW-Stevens Point’s 1989 national championship squad.

Butch Named All-Big Ten, Five Others Gain Honors

University of Wisconsin men's basketball player Brian Butch was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and media. Butch, a senior, led six Badgers to Big Ten post season honors. Butch leads the Badgers in scoring (12.7 ppg.) and rebounding (7.0 ppg.), and ranks in the top 10 in the conference in both categories. UW has now had a first-team all-conference selection in each of Bo Ryan’s seven seasons as head coach. Kirk Penney was named in 2002 and 2003, Devin Harris earned the honors in 2004, Mike Wilkinson in 2005 and Alando Tucker in 2006 and 2007.

He was also named to the Big Ten’s All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive season. In addition to Flowers, junior Joe Krabbenhoft was selected to the Big Ten’s All-Defensive Team.  Junior forward Marcus Landry, the Badgers’ leading scorer during Big Ten play, was a second-team all-conference selection by the coaches and a third-team choice by the media. Sophomore Trevon Hughes earned consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten honors in his first year as UW’s starting point guard.
