The Story of Us
Elijah "Potsy" Richardson, Jr., was the only child of Lillie Bell Jackson Richardson and Elijah Richardson, Sr. He was born July 14, 1926 in Grandview, Texas and succumbed to cancer after a brave fight on September 2, 1962 at the young age of 36. He was a World War II (The Big One) Army veteran and had his birth certificate altered at the age of 16 so that he could enlist in 1942. He wanted to join the romanticized US endeavor after the Pearl Harbor bombing. Full of patriotism and against his mother's wishes, he was off to foreign lands with his Uncle Dennis and other local friends who had also enlisted.
Upon Potsy's return from "over there", he settled into the life of a local war hero. He played in the regional Negro League of amateur baseball teams and caught the eye of a recently divorced young lady named Freddie Mae Price Henderson from nearby Itasca. He married Freddie Mae in October, 1948. To that union was born two daughters, Sadie Ella Richardson (Williams Allen) in 1949 and Gloria Dean Richardson (Lang Deming) in 1950.
