MISSION
STATEMENT
The Savannah State
University
Scholarship program seeks to enhance the image of the institution while
broadening the scope and purpose of the alumni association and its
connection with
the University. The main purpose is to provide a deserving student with
financial assistance and opportunities to attend the University and to
attract
academically talented students.
AMOUNT OF
AWARD
The scholarship is
awarded
annually and the amount may vary. The scholarship may cover expenses
including
but not limited to tuition, fees, and book allowances along with room
and
board. The scholarship is normally for one year, but may be extended
for
additional years.
ELIGIBILITY PROFILE

Candidates
must be
an entering freshman residing in the Metropolitan Atlanta area or
a recipient of the Atlanta Downtown Chapter Scholarship from the
previous
academic year.

Grade Point Average For Entering
Freshman:
Scholarships are made on the basis of high school academic record and
qualifying scores from either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the
American College Test (ACT). The student must posses the following:
(1) 3.0 cumulative G.P.A.
(2) 950 on SAT or 20
on ACT (pre-revised national SAT exam for the class of 2006)

2006 criteria is currently in review by the Scholarship Committee &
will be finalized prior to the 2006 application period

Grade
Point Average for Previous
Recipients: Scholarship recipients who wish to continue receiving the
scholarship during their sophomore, junior, and senior years are
eligible
to reapply. Such candidates must complete the application form
and
provide GPA verification via the SSU Registrar's office. A
returning
scholar must maintain at least a 3.0 collegiate GPA.
Returning recipients are exempt from writing the 500-word essay
referenced below.

Career/Degree
Sought: There are no restrictions as to the field of study. However,
the
student must aspire to rise to the top of whatever field chosen. Also,
the area
of degree must be within the menu of degrees offered by Savannah State
University.
HOW TO
APPLY FOR A
SCHOLARSHIP
Print, then
complete a scholarship
application and submit
a 500-word
essay. The essay should include a brief description of your
academic
strengths,
career objectives and other significant events in your life. Also
include a detailed
statement of why you are applying for a scholarship along with an
explanation
of your desire to attend Savannah State University. In addition to the
application and the essay,
you must provide two letters of recommendation from persons familiar
with you.
The references must include one academic source such as your high
school
counselor. The additional letter may be submitted from a community,
civic or
church
organization and must clearly state the name of the organization and
your relationship to the writer.
APPLICATION
PROCESS

The Scholarship Committee will review all
qualified
applications. Based on the content of the application
packages, the
panel will select five finalists.
·
The
top five finalists must appear before the scholarship panel for
an
interview.
·
The
top five finalists must provide proof of financial need such as
W-2
forms. (Content will remain confidential.)
·
Candidates
who are confirmed as scholarship recipients receive written
notification
of the award amount and its target distribution date to SSU.
·
Scholarship
recipients must maintain good standing with the university.

submit the scholarship application, the essay, a copy of your current
transcript and two letters of recommendation to:

DATES
Applications are
accepted between May 1 and June
15 annually. The completed application package MUST
be postmarked by June 15
of the application
year.
