For The Birds - Updated November 18, 2005 Our new website address: http://for-the-birds.org Email can be sent to: mail@for-the-birds.org There is still an urgent need for supplies, donations, and volunteers to go to the shelters and rescue centers that are housing hundreds of companion birds in the devastated areas of the Gulf Coast. Often overlooked, these pets have died by the hundreds. Weeks later, loose birds are still being rescued and are in need of medical care, due to the unsanitary conditions throughout the area. Steve and I are owned by 5 companion birds (4 of which were adopted), and have kept up with the rescue efforts on behalf of these birds through the internet. We have chosen to concentrate our efforts on helping Donna Powell, of 911 Parrot Alert, and the many volunteers who are now helping her to care for about 200 rescued birds in her home in Baton Rouge, LA. There are many ways in which you can help. We have listed these as follows: What We Are Doing We are accepting donated items (see List of Needed Supplies) at our home at 625 Bradford St N, Gainesville, Georgia 30501-3214. We have a large front porch where items can be left if we are not at home. If you have items to donate and cannot bring them to our home, call us at 678-450-5574, and we will arrange to pick them up from you (see also, How You Can Help Directly). We have opened a bank account to accept cash or check donations so that we can order or purchase needed items to ship directly to Donna Powell’s home in Baton Rouge. Bank deposit slips, receipts, and shipping documentation will be available, to ensure transparency in dealing with these donations. Make checks payable to “For The Birds”. HOW YOU CAN HELP DIRECTLY If you have donated items that you wish to ship directly to Donna Powell, contact us before donating, so we can determine what is needed at this time. Items will be needed over a period of one or two years. You may also contact Ellen Schloss
of Beaks and Noses Inc. in Massachusetts. DIRECT MONETARY DONATIONS Donna Powell Also, you can log onto www.parrots-at-play.org/ and purchase a marvelous calendar designed around photographs sent in by individual bird owners. The cost is $15 + $1.80 shipping, and $10 of that goes directly to rescue efforts. And it makes a great gift! Both www.911parrotalert.com and www.parrots-at-play.org/ have updated information on what has been done so far, and the continued needs of those people who are housing and caring for the birds and working to reunite them with their humans. For other information from organizations helping with, and accepting donations for, the rescue efforts, or to volunteer your time: Birdtalk magazine (www.birdtalkmag.com) Links to just about any one or any group helping, including Donna's operation. The American Federation of Aviculture ( www.afabirds.org) If anyone contributes to this rescue operation through direct donations, please let us know who you are, so we can send a thank you card, and post your donations. We will not name anyone on this website (unless you ask us to do so), and will keep all received information private. Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, a message was posted stating false and inaccurate information regarding the rescue operation centered at Donna Powell's home. Occasionally this message pops back into existence. Should you come upon this, please read the truth, posted at Parrots-At-Play (the October 21 update). For the real story of the rescue operation read the Volunteer Journals listed at the top of this page. DONOR LIST Aussie Bird Toys - Bellevue, WA (Donated Lots) Bailey Foundation - Boothwyn, PA (Provided overnight accommodations prior to Christine Webb’s flight and airport transportation for both arrival and departure. Delco Bird Club - Media, PA (Raised money at several bird club events, and sent several monetary donations to Donna, with matching gifts from club funds. Also, club members have individually donated food, treats, toys, perches, etc. which Christine Webb personally delivered. One club member even put out a donation bucket at her yard sale! Now that's quick thinking! [CW]) Gainesville Bank & Trust - Gainesville, GA (Our friendly and supportive bank. Enough said.) Gainesville Times - Gainesville, GA (Published an article on the front page of the Local Section on October 1, 2005, about For The Birds. The article is here in PDF format.) Each Poop Off package contains approximately 70 wipes X 36 pkgs per case = 2,520 wipes X 4 cases = over 10,000 wipes.) Mango & Co. - 470 South Hill St., Buford, GA 30518-3220. Phone: 678-714-6886 (Donated 38 pounds of food in October; more food and a massive amount of toys in November.) We met Lisa and Trish at the Georgia Cage Bird Society show. Minnich's Birds and More - Shoemakersville, PA (Lisa Minnich had Christine Webb speak of her experiences in Baton Rouge at Lisa’s pet bird mart Nov. 5 & 6. Donation buckets were put out at several locations in the mart. It was well received and people were very interested and eager to help. Jim Foxwell of Birdsnest Specialties (see above) gave up his speaking spot for Christine. Delco Bird Club displayed Christine's photos, took donations, and made a list of websites available, as well as Donna's contact info for direct donations and volunteer opportunities. Hopefully this will generate even more volunteers! [CW]) Mr. Bird Toys - Akron OH (David Vermie makes excellent wooden bird toys by hand, and sells quality toys at low, low prices; email David for details.) New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance - Englishtown, NJ (A very generous monetary donation and a CVS Gift Card). The calendar sells for $15 and $10 of the purchase price is donated to help a bird. You can help by simply buying a calendar! You can even specify which participating non-profit avian organization you want to help. Buy many as they make great gifts.) www.zoneedit.com - Our special thanks for hosting this website. |
Contact Information Jinx Scogin and Steven Thomas Donna Powell If donating items directly to 911 Parrot Alert, please contact us before donating, so we can determine what is needed at this time. List of Needed Supplies Volunteers! Consider spending some vacation or holiday time in Baton Rouge, LA. Call or email us if you are willing, and we will put you in touch with Donna. SPECIAL - Skilled labor such as electrician and plumber. Electrical need has outstripped the capacity for a normal dwelling. If any professional craftsman can donate time to rework the electrical system at Donna's house, it would be a HUGE help! Also, since an army of volunteers has camped out at Donna's for a few months, the faucets have taken a pounding. The services of a skilled plumber would also be helpful. Please remember that these will be ongoing needs for
a long time to come. |
