4th of July fireworks are NO fun for animals!

The day after the fireworks is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters.  Pets

that fled from the loud noises during the night before, are often found miles from their
homes
disoriented and exhausted.  Families often find themselves
searching the streets and shelters looking for a treasured family member
whose fear drove him to jump a high fence or break his leash or chain...or possibly
even injured as a result of fleeing or by the fireworks themselves.

Pets should not be around when fireworks are involved in festivities.
Keep pets inside (home, garage, basement, etc) during the fireworks.
Close the curtains and turn on the television or radio.

A quiet place may provide pet with a sense of security and comfort.

Your pets WILL NOT enjoy the fireworks display, so leave them at home!

If loud noises upset your pets, do not leave them alone while you’re
out
celebrating make sure someone stays with them.

If you think your pets should be tranquilized, consult your veterinarian in advance.

Fireworks are poisionous.  Do not leave them where pets can get to them.

• Practice fire safety – Keep pets away from matches, fireworks, or open fires.
Pets may try to eat or sniff them while on the ground or within their reach.
They can also receive severe burns from fireworks.

Summertime Safety for You and Your Pet

Summer weather brings opportunities for endless fun outdoors for you
and your companion animals. But it also brings health and safety hazards,
including heat stroke and 4th of July fright for all pets from dogs and cats to parrots.

Recommendations to prevent pets from getting overheated:
Never leave pets alone in a parked car even for a minute.

Make sure pets always have fresh, clean water available.

Ensure pets have access to shade and can move out of direct sun.

When temperatures soar, leaving animals unattended in a yard without shade or confined or tied
in such a way that they can’t move into shade is unsafe.

Remember not to leave pets outside for long periods without checking them.
An area with plenty of shade at 10 a.m. may be scorching by afternoon.

If you know the symptoms of heatstroke and how to respond,
you can avert a potential catastrophe for your companion animals.
Your pets might be experiencing heatstroke if they demonstrate any of the following signs:
Excessive panting or difficulty breathing.
Bloody diarrhea or vomit.
Increased respiratory rate.
Salivation.
Depression, stupor, collapse, or coma.

If your pets show any of these warning signs, remove them from direct heat
and spray them with cool water or place wet towels on their head, neck, chest, feet,
and abdomen but do not submerge them in water. Contact your vet immediately.

How much does it cost to care for a dog, cat, fish, hamster, etc?

The shelter has to kill about 5,000 animals per year mostly
due to unneutered/unspayed animals creating unwanted babies
and the lack of space at the shelter.
Have you done your part to stop the this cycle?

1) 'FIX' (SPAY OR NEUTER) ALL OF
THE CATS AND DOGS YOU FEED!

Need help catching them?  Call 423-926-8769 for help.
Need help paying for the surgery?  Call 423-926-8533 for help.

2) PREVENT DISEASE...GET YOUR PET ALL OF IT'S YEARLY VACCINES!
Save your pet's life (and your money) with prevention, instead of treatment.

3) ADOPT FROM A SHELTER OR RESCUE,
INSTEAD OF BUYING FROM A BREEDER!

Use Petfinder.org to find any breed you want!
Every pet bought from a breeder = another homeless pet killed at the shelter.

4) EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT THE BREED BEFORE ADOPTING!
Do not bring a pet into a home that is not suitable for it.

5) ADOPT FOR LIFE...PETS CAN LIVE UP TO 20 YEARS!
Keep this in mind before you make this long term commitment.

6) KEEP YOUR INFO UP TO DATE ON YOUR PET'S TAG
OR MICROCHIP
in case of an emergency.

Consider this before getting a new kitten or puppy....
