Alan Thomas will be joining us to share his thoughts on the Easter Mystery and to prepare us for the Holy Three Days. However, since this is a Solemnity, a major feast day, we will celebrate Mass at 7:45 that morning, followed by Eucharistic Adoration until 9:00 when we will celebrate Morning Prayer for the Feast. The remainder of the schedule will be the same as before, with two short talks by Fr. Alan. We will conclude with lunch at noon.

Finally, if you wish to stay for lunch could you please sign-up on the kiosk so we can prepare enough food for everyone. So, please feel free to join us, and anyone is welcome to join us, even folks from other parishes. If you have any questions, just call.

Iconographer, Teresa Futrick will be on hand to present information and answer any questions you might have about this often misunderstood art form. Over 100 icons and icon prints of all types will be displayed, including a rare collection of ancient Russian hand-painted icons. This presentation is free and open to all. Please join us for this Lenten journey into one of the Church's great treasures, on Saturday, April 2 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Rose of Lima Church in Altoona. Contact Ann Mingyar at 814-946-5383 with any questions.

Sunday Evening Prayer - As we did in the Advent/Christmas Season, we will be celebrating Solemn Vespers (Evening Prayer) for each Sunday in Lent and Easter. We will begin at 6:30 each Sunday in the Church with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We will then pray Evening Prayer and conclude with Benediction.

As I mentioned before, both Pope John Paul and Pope Benedict have been saying over and over that we must do more to make our Sundays a day of rest and a day of prayer. In our secular world Sunday is looking more and more like the other six days of the week. We need Sunday!! We need a day of rest, a day of family, a day when we don’t just run off to cram in what we didn’t get done the remaining of the week. Especially for our young people, we need this day of rest, prayer and family. If God rested after 6 days of work, who are we to do differently. In years past many parishes have celebrated not only Holy Mass, but they have included Evening Prayer (Vespers) as a way to keep holy the Lord’s Day. Maybe this can be one way you can observe the Sunday day of rest.

Part 4. A God close to our weakness

Confession therefore is the encounter with divine forgiveness, which is offered to us in Jesus and transmitted to us through the ministry of the Church. In this effective sign of grace, meeting with endless mercy, we are offered the face of a God who knows like no one our human condition and comes close to it with very tender love.

Innumerable episodes in the life of Jesus demonstrate this to us, from the meeting with the Samaritan woman to the healing of the paralytic, from the forgiveness of the adulteress to the tears in the face of the death of his friend Lazarus… we have immense need of this tender and compassionate closeness of God, as a simple glance at our existence also shows: Each one of us lives with his own weakness, goes through sickness, draws near to death, is aware of the challenge of the questions that all this poses to the heart.

No matter how much we wish to do good, the frailty that characterizes us all, exposes us continually to the risk of falling into temptation. The Apostle Paul described this experience with precision: "I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do" (Romans 7:24).

It is the interior conflict from which is born the invocation: "Who will deliver me from this body of death?" (Romans 7:24). To it responds in a special way the sacrament of forgiveness, which comes to rescue us always again in our condition of sin, reaching us with the healing power of divine grace and transforming our heart and our behavior.

Because of this, the Church does not tire of proposing the grace of this sacrament to us during the whole journey of our lives: Through it Jesus, true heavenly physician, takes charge of our sins and accompanies us, continuing his work of healing and salvation. As happens in every love story, also the Covenant with the Lord must be tirelessly renewed: Faithfulness is the ever-new desire of the heart that gives itself and receives the love offered it, until the day that God will be all in all.

Liturgical Reflection…Pope Benedict XVI has chosen the theme for his Lenten message the Gospel text, "Jesus, at the sight of the crowds, was moved to pity" (Mt 9:36) The Holy Father speaks of the holy "gaze" of Christ upon the poor of the world. His Holiness states, "In the face of the terrible challenge of poverty afflicting so much of the world's population, indifference and self-centered isolation stand in stark contrast to the 'gaze' of Christ." This Lent is an opportunity for believers to reflect on our response to the poor of the earth. Have self-centeredness and selfishness become so much a part of our lives that we do not even notice the pain and suffering around us? As we intensify our prayer this Lent, may we become more aware that we can responsibly lighten the sufferings of others. Identify one concrete way in which you can ease the suffering of another.

Lenten Message of Our Holy Father, Benedict XVI, 2006

You are invited to join Bishop Joseph with his priests in the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Lent is the Church's season to remind the faithful of our need to turn from sin and seek God's mercy. We seek reconciliation with God and our neighbor. Gather with all who identify themselves as sinners joyfully proclaiming the joy and forgiveness of God. A Communal Penance Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 5 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, at 6:30 PM. This public gathering of believers is a great preparation for the celebration of the Easter mysteries. Plan to gather for this hour of prayer celebrating God's mercy in liturgy.

Protecting God's Children - What should I do if a child reveals an experience of abuse to me?

Be open and understanding. Try to stay calm. If you react strongly, the child may stop talking, take back information or internalize this as another reason to feel bad about him or herself.

Understand that the child is probably having mixed feelings. Often, the perpetrator of sexual abuse is someone close to the child. Although the child may have strong negative feelings about the person's abusive behavior, he or she also may love them for other behaviors.

Believe the child. Children rarely make up stories about sexual abuse. Also, they tend to keep the abuse a secret for a long time because they have been threatened by the perpetrator and repeatedly told the abuse is their own fault. Reassure the child that they are not to blame for what happened and let them know you will help them. Children & Youth Protection and Advocacy Office, Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown @ 886-8250

Haiti Committee Update: Many thanks to all who enjoyed the Ash Wednesday soup supper, and to those who made the delicious soup! Your generous donations enable us to continue to provide financial support to our twin parish in Haiti. As many of you know our parish began the twinning relationship with Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Marmount, Haiti in 1991. Over the years we have raised money for a variety of projects including a Medical Mission with Altoona Hospital; the purchase of a diesel powered grist mill for grinding flour; the purchase of a generator to provide electricity for lighting sufficient to conduct evening classes; and the reconstruction of a bakery damaged in a hurricane. In recent years our efforts have focused on education. Our funds have helped the small village’s school grow from about 150 to 350 students. This fall, at the request of the pastor we sent sneakers and composition books for the children.

Watch the bulletin for details about Haiti Day, Friday, April 7th.

All Fridays of Lent (March 24,31,and April 7) are days of abstinence. FASTING refers to only one full meal, with two small meals and no eating otherwise for the day. ABSTINENCE refers to not eating meat at all during the day. All those who have reached their 14th year are obliged to ABSTAIN. The Church directs the holy FAST to all those in the 18th year until their 60th year (Canon1252). The ancient practice of fasting and abstaining can occur throughout the other days of Lent. This is not obligatory and can take a variety of forms distinct from food

The Art of Sending Greetings - "Clearly you are a letter of Christ which I have delivered, a letter not written with ink but by the spirit of the Living God." Sr. Maryann Palko, CCW will conduct this retreat day which will include prayer, exploring the idea of "greetings" in scripture, an opportunity for a hands-on experience of creating a personal greeting card. Thursday, March 23 from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Donation $35 includes lunch and materials. Register in advance @ 886-3972 or 886-4098 CCW Incarnation Center, 394 Bem Road, Gallitzin.

Fourth Sunday of Lent

March 26, 2006

Reading I 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a
The LORD said to Samuel:"Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen my king from among his sons." As Jesse and his sons came to the sacrifice, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord’s anointed is here before him." But the LORD said to Samuel: "Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the LORD looks into the heart." In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen any one of these. "Then Samuel asked Jesse,
‘Are these all the sons you have?" Jesse replied, "There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep. "Samuel said to Jesse, "Send for him; we will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here." Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them. He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance.
The LORD said, "There – anoint him, for this is the one!"
Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and from that day on, the spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 23: 1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6
R.
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.In verdant pastures he gives me repose;beside restful waters he leads me;he refreshes my soul.
R.
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side With your rod and your staff that give me courage.
R.
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes;
you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
R.
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come.
R.
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

Reading II
Eph 5:8-14
Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light."

Gospel
Jn 9:1-41
As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered, "Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day.Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, "Go wash in the Pool of Siloam" -. which means Sent .-.So he went and washed, and came back able to see. His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, "Isn’t this the one who used to sit and beg?" Some said, "It is," but others said, "No, he just looks like him." He said, "I am." So they said to him, "How were your eyes opened?" He replied, "The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went there and washed and was able to see." And they said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I don’t know."
They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath. So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see."
So some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God,because he does not keep the sabbath." But others said,"How can a sinful man do such signs?" And there was a division among them. So they said to the blind man again, "What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet."
Now the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and gained his sight until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his sight. They asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How does he now see?" His parents answered and said, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. We do not know how he sees now, nor do we know who opened his eyes.Ask him, he is of age; he can speak for himself." His parents said this because they were afraid
of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue. For this reason his parents said, "He is of age; question him." So a second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, "Give God the praise! We know that this man is a sinner." He replied, "If he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see." So they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" He answered them, "I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again?
Do you want to become his disciples, too?" They ridiculed him and said, "You are that man’s disciple; we are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is from." The man answered and said to them, "This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him. It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything." They answered and said to him, "You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?" Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He answered and said, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" Jesus said to him, "You have seen him,
the one speaking with you is he." He said, "I do believe, Lord," and he worshiped him. Then Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind." Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, "Surely we are not also blind, are we?" Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains."
