Adult Summer School

We will probably be starting our Adult Education Classes on Sunday, September 28th at 9:15. As I wrote before, we will be doing a study of the Old Testament. If you are planning to come, and I hope many of you are, you need to get a book. We have a sign-up sheet on the kiosk. Please sign-up so that we can purchase a book for you for the class. We will buy the books, but if you wish to reimburse us that will be greatly appreciated. If not, that is okay too. For now, it is important to sign-up for your book.

The Haiti Committee is still in need of volunteers to work a 3 hour shift at the Keystone Country Fair. We especially need help on Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 7th. Please add your name and phone number to the schedule on the kiosk or call Dave or Mary Petrak at 696-3259.

Finance Council will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 10th at 6:30 PM.

ATTENTION: Our plans for a parish photo directory has been put on hold until the spring. More details will be available at a later date.

Stewardship at St. John’s

Weekly Reflection

Do your thoughts, words, and deeds demonstrate that you are "convinced that [Jesus is} the Holy One of God' (john 6:69)? Can you embrace Joshua's choice as your own: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord" (Jos 24:15)?

Thank you for sharing with your Parish

a portion of what God has given you!

Parish Council Meeting

At our August 18th Parish meeting we discussed the following items. First, however, we welcomed our new members to the Council. 1) The basement renovations are continuing to more forward. We should be getting bids soon, and the committee appointed by the Parish Council to supervise the work will be reviewing bids. Constructions should follow the acceptance of those bids. We will inform the parish of the schedule for construction when such bids are approved. 2) The walk-in freezer, approved by the Council, has been completed. This will be a cost effective improvement in the cafeteria. 3) The Council members received a copy of next year's budget, and a copy of last year's receipts and expenses. 4) There will again be a workshop about Parish councils in the fall, and many of our members will be attending the workshop, which will be held at Bishop Guilfoyle. 5) It was proposed to establish a new committee in the Parish Council entitled Youth Ministry. Some of our parishioners involved with our youth are attending a series of workshops about a more integrated approach to youth ministry. Presently we are working with our high school students, but we hope to move the process to our jr. high students too. 6) The raffle will be starting soon. This has been a very successful fundraiser for our parish, and we thank Matt Reilly for all the help putting the raffle together. 7) We had our first meeting regarding the possibility of an icon of St. John in the gathering space. Our next meeting will be September 4th in the evening so more people can attend. 8) There was a discussion of our light attendance for the Holy Day. Our next Parish Council meeting will begin in the chapel and be on Tuesday, September 23rd at 6:30.

Spiritual Book Club - Our next meeting of the Book Club will be on Thursday, Aug 28th at 6:30 in the rectory. We will discuss the rest of the book of The Marian Profile by Brendan Leahy. Our next book will be Ponder These Things: Praying with Icons of the Virgin by Rowan Williams. Please read and join us when you can.

Centering Prayer Our next Centering Prayer gathering will be on Monday, Sept. 15th at 6:00 PM. We will again meet in the church to pray, then we will adjourn to the day chapel to briefly discuss the rest of Part 1 of The Mystery of Christ by Thomas Keating.

Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) - We, at St. John's Church, extend an invitation to anyone in the Altoona, Hollidaysburg or Lakemont area who might be interested in looking into the Catholic faith to become part of the Parish Christian Initiation process.

The Christian Initiation Process is the method by which individuals have a chance to look very closely at Catholic beliefs, practices, scripture, liturgy, etc. If they decide to join the Catholic faith they will be received into the church at the Easter Vigil. These sessions run generally from September until Pentecost and are concerned with the total formation of adults into believing, praying, and serving within the local Catholic church community.

Weekly sessions will be starting shortly. For further information, contact Patsy Shaw at 944-7505 or the church office at 942-5503.

UPCOMING PARISH SOCIAL EVENTS:

October - Hayride

November - Ice Skating Party (Galactic Ice)

Baptism Class - Our next class for parents who will be having their child baptized will be Saturday, September 6 at 6:15, or right after the Saturday evening Mass. Parents and godparents if possible, are required to attend this class before the baptism of their child. Please call me here at the rectory to let me know you are coming.

September 12th-St. John's Adult Bowling League

Soon the pins will be flying, come on and join in the fun! The league bowls every other Friday night at 9:00 PM from early September to the following spring at Holiday Bowl. No bowling skills are required, just the desire to join your fellow parishioners in an enjoyable parish fund-raiser. New and current members should sign up on the sheet on the kiosk. PLEASE NOTE that bowling on September 12th will start at 8:00 PM with a meeting for all, then bowling at 9:00PM. See you there!

Questions: Call Pam Klobuka 695-7954

Sunday Pre-school - We will again be having our preschool for 3-5 year olds during the 11:00 Mass on Sundays. We are looking for a few dedicated people to help out. One must have the necessary clearances plus attend a Protecting God's Children workshop. If you are interested please call me here in the rectory at 942-5503 or Christine Stachmus at 942-7683.

HOSPITAL AND HOME VISITATION MEETING - We would like to have a meeting of anyone who is interested in the ministry of visiting the sick and homebound on Wednesday, August 27th at 6:30 in the rectory. This is a very important and beautiful ministry in which we need much help. All those already visiting the hospitals, nursing homes and private homes are asked to attend along with anyone else who would like to be part of this pastoral care ministry.

Icon meeting - Here is an update on our first meeting concerning a possible icon of St. John for our parish. The group present at our first meeting considered several traditional icon styles featuring St. John. Three of the most common are as follows: St. John depicted as an older man appearing as though he is writing; St. John as the "Beloved Disciple" as at the Last Supper (in some proximity to Christ); and St. John as a younger man at the foot of the cross during the crucifixion. (This icon would actually be part of a three "icon" grouping that would include an icon of Mary, the existing (new) crucifix as a middle "icon" and an icon of St. John as the third one in the group.)

Since these icons are so diverse it was felt that they would each carry an entirely different message. It was decided, therefore, that it would be best to acquire sketches of each of these and present them, along with some education concerning icons in general and the three icons in particular, to the parish for further consideration to determine which one best represents our Church. To that end, Theresa Futrick, the iconographer, will make some sketches and bring them to the next meeting which will be held on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7 PM. At that meeting the sketches will be narrowed down to three (one per icon type). Teams or individuals will volunteer to prepare a short presentation on each icon. These presentations will be made to the parishioners at an Adult Education Class sometime in September. At that time, one will be selected (hopefully) and Theresa will begin painting. Depending upon other jobs that she has yet to complete, our icon(s) should take approximately 3 months.

Religious Education News - Watch your mail for Religious education registration forms and schedules. The DEADLINE for registration is August 25. We will not have registration on the first day of class. ALSO NO PHONE REGISTRATIONS!

Adult choir rehearses every Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 and sings on all but the 4th Sunday of the month at the 11:00 Liturgy. In addition to adults, high school students are also welcome to sing in the Adult Choir. There is no audition and you do not need to know how to read music. Youth Choir rehearses Thursday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 and sings on the 4th Sunday of the month at the 11:00 Mass. You must be in 4th grade or older to sing in the Youth Choir. Rehearsals will begin on Thursday, September 11 at 6:30.

Once again this year, the choirs of St. John the Evangelist Church will combine to provide a concert of Advent and Christmas music on Sunday, December 14, as part of the Music at St. John’s Concert Series. Join the choir now to participate in this special event.

Reading I Dt 4:1-2, 6-8

Moses said to the people: "Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees which I am teaching you to observe, that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. In your observance of the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin upon you, you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from it. Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations, who will hear of all these statutes and say, ‘This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.' For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him?
Or what great nation has statutes and decrees that are as just as this whole law which I am setting before you today?"

1. How should traditional religious observances impact others?

Responsorial Psalm Ps 15:2-3, 3-4, 4-5

R
One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Whoever walks blamelessly and does justice; who thinks the truth in his heart and slanders not with his tongue.
R
One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Who harms not his fellow man, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor; by whom the reprobate is despised, while he honors those who fear the Lord.
R
One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Who lends not his money at usury and accepts no bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things shall never be disturbed.
R
One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.

Reading II Jas 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27

Dearest brothers and sisters: All good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change. He willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

2. What are the true marks of godly religion?

3. What does the phrase " Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you " mean to you?

Gospel Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. - For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace
they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. - So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, "Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?" He responded, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:
This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition."
He summoned the crowd again and said to them,
"Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.
"From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile."

4. How would you define hypocrisy?

5. What kind of non-religious family traditions does your family observe?

6. What religious traditions do you observe that you would like to more fully understand?

7. Give an example of how a tradition, when observed correctly, could positively impact a person's heart?

8. What inner message of the heart is the Spirit whispering to you and your community this week?
