The K&N air filter supposedly allows a little better breathing, but the main selling point for me is that it is reusable so I can clean and re-oil it instead of purchasing a new filter at each service. Installing the K&N does involve a slight modification of the stock airbox lid. There is a divider that splits the lid into two compartments and about an inch of this divider needs to be removed to avoid interference with the K&N. The stock filter allows the divider to slip between the paper pleats but this is not possible with the K&N. This is no hard to do, I scored the plastic with a sharp knife and then snapped it with a pair of pliers.
I have played with a couple of airbox modifications such as removing the rubber "snorkels" and removing the airbox lid altogether. I'm undecided on these modifications. Without a dyno I cannot perceive any difference in power. I do notice a bit more intake noise, this can be good or bad depending upon personal taste. For now I'm using the stock airbox lid, without the snorkels.
