- miscellaneos lubricants
Information on this page last updated 08/17/01.
Some lubricants I find very useful:
- Dielectric silicone grease. Usually sold in small tubes meant for use
on automotive ignition parts like spark plug boots. Works great inside any
electrical connectors to keep moisture and corrosion out.
- Anti-seize compound. Use it on any threaded fasteners that do not need
a locking agent like loctite. Especially good for dissimilar metals like
the steel bolts that thread into aluminum. Also great for exhaust system
fasteners.
- Boeshield T-9 corrosion
preventative. Apparently developed by Boeing,
not meant to lubricate but rather to inhibit corrosion. Much better than
WD-40 in my opinion. Dries to a light waxy coating, not too messy. I use
this on tools and unpainted metal surfaces in my humid south Texas garage,
and on fasteners on the bike. I get mine from a local woodworking supply
house, I'm sure most machine tool and industrial supply houses carry it.
One of the ST2 owners list members saw it for sale at Lowes and Home Depot
as well.
- Maxima chain wax. I find this to be much cleaner than various other
chain lubes I have tried. I clean the chain regularly by spraying with WD-40
and wiping with a rag, then apply the chain wax and wipe of the excess. Note
this works best when the chain is warm. The wax keps the chain looking nice
and none of it flings off onto the rear wheel.
