Richard's ST2 pages - reliability

Information on this page last updated 2/16/02.

I've owned 6 Japanese bikes and one other Ducati, a 907ie, before I bought the ST2. To be honest I never have felt the Ducatis to be less reliable than the others. I did have a cracked coolant tank on the 907 that needed replacement, but other than that just normal maintenance. With the ST2 it has been just normal maintenance so far except for a failed alternator which was replaced under warranty.

I do like to do all of my own maintenance and keep a pretty close eye on what's loose, worn, etc. and take preventative measures. So maybe that helps and also maybe I've just been lucky with my two Ducatis. But I really do believe that Ducati reliability in general is about the same as other brands as long as they are maintained according to schedule.

Now there are drawbacks in that Ducati service intervals are shorter than most Japanese bikes and parts also tend to be more expensive. But for me at least the pleasure from riding a Ducati outweighs those drawbacks.
