Richard's ST2 pages - shift lever

Information on this page last updated 9/21/01.

The early ST2s that came into the US had the same shift lever as the 916. Due to the lever/peg relationship on the ST2 this lever was a little too short and thus difficult to use. Ducati replaced mine free of charge with the longer lever in the above photo.

If you are not already aware, the shifter can be adjusted up or down relative to the footpeg to suit your foot size and preferences. Simply loosen the two locknuts on the shaft between the shift lever and the transmission, rotate the center portion of the shaft, then tighten the locknuts. Note that one of the locknuts is reverse-threaded.

If you prefer to use a reverse shifting pattern such as most racers use, this is possible on the ST2. I have not done this myself but I received the following info via email from someone who has (thanks Tom!). "I got a Ducati part for $19 that is a straight arm that attaches to the spline instead of a bent one. I think it's for a 748 or 996/998 model. The part number is 037069020. The Ducati dealer in Tucson, Arizona had one. It allows the nut/threads to clear the countershaft cover. Ducati also offers a GP shifter for ~ $135 that replaces the shaft and the standard shift pedal. It's like a Honda VFR shift lever. It attaches to the spline, extending aft. It is unique in that it has a cam at the shift end (foot contact point) to adjust height. I opted for the $19 part. It works fine so far."

If the internal shift mechanism adjustment is out-of-whack the transmission may get stuck in gear. This happened to an ST2 Owners list memeber and he put together a page explaining the fix procedure. Click here to take a look.
