If you like working on your own bike then by all means consider changing your own tires. On the ST2 and it is a pretty straight-forward job if you have the right tools, i.e. a bead breaker and a couple of long tire irons.
The rear wheel comes off easily, just remove the axle, push forward to give enough slack to get the chain off the rear sprocket and that's it. On the front you will need to remove both brake calipers, after that just remove the axle and the wheel will come right out. Removing the front fender will give more clearance if you do not have the front end very high in the air. To raise the front end I put the bike on the center stand, removed the fairing lowers, and then used a jack under the horizontal cylinder.
There are several web sites that cover tire changing and balancing so I will just list some of them here rather than go into details. I purchased a c-clamp style bead breaker and some Motion Pro tire irons from JC Whitney so cannot comment on how effective the home-brew tools are. I used a couple of lengths of old rubber hose split lengthwise as rim protectors to keep from scratching the wheels with the tire irons. I did do my own balancing and have no noticeable vibration.
