ImageMagick is a free software suite to create, edit, and compose bitmap images. It can read, convert and write images in a large variety of formats. Images can be cropped, colors can be changed, various effects can be applied, images can be rotated and combined, and text, lines, polygons, ellipses and Bézier curves can be added to images and stretched and rotated.

OmniFormat is a free (nagware) document conversion utility which allows dynamic conversion and image manipulation of over 75 file formats including HTML, DOC, XLS, WPD, PDF, JPG, GIF, TIF, PNG, PCX, PPT, PS, TXT, Photo CD, FAX and MPEG.

Adobe Acrobat Reader - Registration required - Used to read PDF files. Windows and Mac only, and older versions are required of you are running Windows 98SE, 98, or a Mac. If you are using Linux, you need something else. This is why I don't like PDF as a format, and you will hopefully not see much of it here.

OpenOffice - FREE - Used to Create/Read/Write OpenOffice documents. This is a free, source provided, replacement for Microsoft Office, and is available for many different platforms including Windows, Macs, Solaris, and Linux and supports over a dozen languages. It can read/write Microsoft Office files, but on far more systems that MS software supports. In addition, it seems to be far less buggy that MS products. Oh, and it's FREE.
