Here's the straight scoop on two-way radio services available to hobbiests, the general public, and businesses in the U.S.
Would you like reliable short range communications with family members who are not Hams and have no interest in radio as a hobby? You might be interested in the new Family Radio Service. This service allows up to 1/2 watt on UHF and no licenses are needed. Here are a couple of links to FRS-related information.
If the Family Radio Service lacks the range and flexibility that your family needs, you might be a candidate for the General Mobile Radio Service. This licensed radio service allows up to 50 watts on UHF and even permits repeaters to vastly increase your distance. A FCC license is needed but no examination is required and one license covers your entire immediate family. Here are a couple of links to GMRS-related information.
Note that the first seven FRS frequencies coincide with the seven GMRS interstitial frequencies and the last seven FRS channels are squeezed between the eight GMRS repeater input frequencies.
