Walla Walla Sweet Onion Peggers
First "28
Hand"
August 15, 2002
This
feat was accomplished by the club director Mr. Jim Duff when he drew to 4 -
5's a 3
and a 7 in his hand. Quickly dispensing the 3 and 7 to the crib Jim was
lucky enough to cut a 10 and score this, the second highest scoring hand in the
game.
This
gem was worth $420.00 to Jim as the pool had risen to an all time high of
$840.00.
Terry Smith had scored a 29 hand, the highest hand
possible, on 23 August, 2001. Jim's 28 came just 1 week short of being 1 year to
the day from Terry's remarkable accomplishment.
Second "28
Hand"
August 22, 2002
This
feat was accomplished by the 2001-2002 Club Champion Mr. John Hensley.
He drew to 4 -
5's and cut a 10!! Scoring this, the second highest scoring hand in the
game. This
gem was worth $217.00 to John as the pool had shrunk to $434.00.
This came 1 year to the day from Terry Smith's 29 hand and just a week
after Jim Duff hit a very similar 28 hand.
Third "28
Hand"
November 23, 2002
This
feat was accomplished by Mr. Ivan Jacobsen.
Ivan was playing in the first ever GR Regional Tournament hosted by the Sweet Onion Peggers. He holds the distinction of being the First Sweet Onion
Pegger to hit a 28 hand in a tournament or in season. All others were
scored off season at a weekly event. Congratulations Ivan!!
Fourth "28
Hand"
January 16, 2003
Mr. John Reed was able to cut his way to a slice of history. John
was dealt the masterpiece by our Director and this in the first game of the
night too. John walked off with $252.00 and he caught the last 24 hand and
finished 5th for the night too. History and large dollars a winning pair
says I!!
Fifth "28
Hand"
April 17, 2003
Fifth Winner of the second best hand in Cribbage is one of the "Plank Owners" of the club, Mr. "Evil" Bill Palumbo. He turned the trick on April the 17, 2003 and was playing as the #1 chair and only representative of "Murders Row" that night. Bill was dealt 3 - 5's and a Jack and proceeded to cut up that 4th 5. He was so delighted he told everyone even before he played the hand!! Luckily he got to count it and scooped up $258.00 for this little gem.
Sixth "28
Hand"
May 15, 2003
Sixth Winner of the second best hand in Cribbage goes to Mr. Jim Michelson. After a long absence, Jim showed up on May 15th and scored a victory for $167. Most of the members tried to convince Jim that because of his long absence, he would have to take only one-fourth of the pool for his 28 hand, but Jim couldn't be convinced and collected half of the prize fund!
Seventh "28
Hand"
January 22, 2004
Our very own Ms Helen "The Hellion" Daniels struck gold this night capturing the second best hand in the game. Everyone was happy to see one of the original members strike it rich!! Helen also placed 6th on the night and pocketed some more bucks!! Helen can buy dang near all the dog biscuits she needs with the $257 she won.
Eighth "28
Hand"
February 12, 2004
Mr. DeWayne Eisenbarth took hold this night and held those 4 - 5 spotted cards and was able to cut op a 10 of diamonds to complete this draining of the pool by 50%. It was worth $162.00 and a very large smile too.
Ninth "28
Hand"
March 4, 2004
Mr. Ralph Yaw was blessed by the Card God and a great cut!! He held 3 - 5's and a 10 when his pone was nice enough to cut up that 4th 5 card and complete the night for him. For his troubles Ralph was awarded $112.00 and oh yes, he won the game too!!
Tenth"28
Hand"
September 2, 2004
Mr. Mike "Mr Quizno's" Clapper was the 5th season's opening night highlight reel all by himself! In Game 3 of the night Mike was having trouble counting his hand when his pone, J. R. "The Spoiler" Cast asked to look at it. I did and what did I behold in hand Mike held a King and three of the nicest looking 5's I had seen. The starter card was, yep the fourth 5. Well I reckon Mike must have been tired from working at his business cause he was struggling along trying to say he had a 24!! But he recounted and then came the dawn and he declared he held a 28. For being a good counter Mike collected $166.00.
Eleventh"28
Hand"
January 27, 2005
J. R. "The Spoiler" Cast, famous for being one of the easy going members who can sure take a joke (and dish'em out too) was being his usual friendly and outgoing self this night when he was faced with a dilemma. The Card God had allowed him to hold and decide upon a hand consisting of four of those pesky 5's and a pair of 10's. Decision made and the pair was dumped to the Pones crib. Then came the cut and there appeared a nice, beautiful King of Clubs. I think the shock of seeing the King was too much for The Spoiler as he had a brain cramp and was struggling to count this hand. A call went out for a judge and as I stood there he advised me that he had a 28 hand and pegged same. Thus $256.00 found it's way into his wallet!!
Twelfth "28
Hand"
September 15, 2005
Martin "Ole #1" Hellberg, had a night to remember. He was dealt three 5's and a face card and cut the other 5 for a nice 28 in Game 7 against "Bad" Betty Morehouse. For his efforts Martin got a cool $258 (1/2 of the 28/29 pool)! Consequently, Martin won that game and only one other game that night. He had an off night in the wins column but probably took home the most money he has won at a cribbage tournament/club night (he also won a specialty pool for another $10 that night). Good job Martin, keep up those "skill" cards.
Thirteenth "28
Hand"
October 27, 2005
"Bad" Betty Morehouse, had a night to remember. She was dealt three 5's and a Queen and cut the other 5 for a nice 28 in Game 1 against Carl "The Wizard" Schaefer. For her efforts Betty got a cool $184 (1/2 of the 28/29 pool)! Betty ended up coming in 5th place that night also in addition to the 28 hand. Good job Betty, be sure to thank Carl!
Fourteenth "28
Hand"
November 3, 2005
"Bad" Betty Morehouse, had another night to remember and one for the record books. She was dealt three 5's and a face card and cut the other 5 for a nice 28 in Game 7 against Dick "The Grumbler" Taylor. For her efforts Betty got a cool $101 (1/2 of the 28/29 pool)! Betty also came in 2nd place that night. Betty is the first person in our club to hit 28 hands on back to back club nights! Good job Betty, be sure to thank "The Grumbler"!
Fifteenth "28
Hand"
November 17, 2005
Martin "Ole #1" Hellberg, got dealt another 28 hand, his second of this season. By none other than ......................"Bad" Betty Morehouse. This is the second time that Betty has dealt Martin a 28 (both of them in Game 7) this year! For his efforts Martin received half of the 28/29 pool ($71). The pool unfortunately has been dwindling as of late, not quite as attractive as the $258 that Martin won earlier in the season! Good job Martin, keep up those "skill" cards. For those keeping track of stats, this is the fourth 28 hand that Betty has received or dealt this season.
Sixteenth "28
Hand"
January 12, 2006
"Trooper" Tom Varnell, held onto the 5th 28 hand of this season, all of them coming before the mid-point of the season! Tom was playing against Jim "Teacher" Duff in game 6 of the evening and low and behold he fanned out the cards to three 5's and a face card. Miraculously, the other 5 was cut. This was a record night because of the unusually high number of "draws" for a 28 hand. Before Tom's 28 hand there was 5 other "draws" for a 28 hand that night. One of the other draw was by Jeremy "The Cat" Morris a mere 10 seconds before Tom's 28. Ironically, Tom played Jeremy the game before. Tom was just across the skunk line at hole 28.....Jeremy and Tom joked about Tom needing a 28 hand. Tom recalled that he has only had one 28 hand in his life. Little did Tom know that about 10 minutes later he would have his second! Tom went home with $100 (half of the 29/29 pool) at the end of the evening along with a big smile! This was the first 28 of this season that "Bad" Betty Morehouse was not involved in!
Seventeenth "28
Hand"
March 2, 2006
Tony Scheibe, held onto the 6th 28 hand of this season! Tony was playing Helen "The Hellion" Daniels in the first game of the evening and looked down and was holding onto three 5's and a face card. He never imagined what would happen next....the other 5 was cut. For his hard work Tony took home half of the 28/29 pool ($103). It is amazing that "Bad" Betty Morehouse was not involved in this 28 hand either!
Eighteenth "28
Hand"
March 23, 2006
Tony Scheibe, held onto the 7th 28 hand of this season! Tony held onto the
28 hand in Game 5 for a quick $76 (half of the 28/29 pool). We took a vote
and because of Tony's two 28 hands during the month of March we nicknamed him
"Mr. 28". Good job Tony!
Nineteenth "28
Hand"
March 15, 2007
Rick Westerman (Visitor), counted the first 28 of this year....almost 1 year
to the day of the last 28. Rick and fellow pegger Channing Holmes were
visiting Walla Walla (from Wenatchee) on their way to the Baker City tournament
and decided to stop by and play. Rick was not eligible for half of the
28/29 pool because it is only available to club members. There were a
couple of other chances at a 28 on the same night with the most notable being
another club member being dealt 4-5's and not being able to cut a 10 point card
(38.5% chance). The odds of getting a 28 hand is 1 in 15,028 hands.
As a follow up to the 28 in our club, Rick played at Club 305 shortly after
visiting Walla Walla
and counted a 28 during play resulting in two 28 hands in less than a week. Good job Rick!
Twentieth "28
Hand"
March 22, 2007
Wayne "Super Trooper" Von Clasen, counted the first 28 by a club member this year. Wayne was dealt 4-5's and cut a Jack for an easy 28 and $252 (1/2 of the 28/29 fund). Good job Wayne!
