Ms. Sweety saw a lot of action tonight early in the evening.  Wayne “Super Trooper” Von Clasen immediately declared 24 a few hands into the first game, unfortunately Wayne couldn out peg his opponent.  John “Rotten” Reed didn’t let Wayne keep Ms. Sweety very long, he counted a 24 later in the first game but couldn’t pull off the win either!  Martin “Ole #1” Hellberg was next to get a visit from Ms. Sweety in the second game of the night….keeping with the previous games Martin didn’t get a victory either.  Jeremy “The Cat” Morris held onto a 24 later in the second game and was the first pegger to use a 24 to earn a victory with the 24.  As a side note, Jeremy’s 24 was against John “Saweet” Hensley.  Jeremy’s glory only lasted a few games, Shirley “Buzz Saw” Guest was dealt (and cut) a 24 in Game 5 against….John “Saweet” Hensley.  To add insult  to injury, John also was involved in the last 24 of the night that was claimed by Helen “The Hellion” Daniels in Game 7.  It was a good night to be on the other side of the table from John!  Helen walked out the door at the end of the night with $16 for the last 24.

EVENT HAPPENINGS

            First
was Helen “The Hellion” Daniels who turned in a 14 Gm Pt, 7 W, +64 Sprd Pts card
tonight.  Helen started off the night on fire, she won 5 straight until she received her first loss in Game 6 from Jeremy “The Cat” Morris.  She won the next game by 22 points thanks to John “Saweet” Hensley’s ability to deal 24’s tonight. She lost the 8th game of the night to John “Rotten” Reed.  She finished the night with a win over Shirley “Buzz Saw” Guest.  All in all, Helen cleaned out our pockets of $72 tonight including the last 24 and 1st Place.  Good job Helen!

Second was John “Rotten” Reed who turned in a 14 Gm Pt, 6 W, +129 Sprd Pts card.  John got off to a rough start by losing a close game to Dick “The Grumbler” Taylor.  Not one to fall down and stay down, John pulled up his boot straps and skunked his next two opponents to get back on track.  He edged out John “Saweet” Hensley in the 4th game of the night (one of the few games that “Saweet” played that didn’t have a 24).  John was at 8 points after the 4th game when he went on a mini losing streak and dropped two straight games.  He got back up and finished strong with 3 staight wins to end the night.  Johns losses were by 5, 4, & 7 points an average of 5 points a loss…..on the flip side, he averaged 24 points in each of his wins.  Good job John!

Third was Martin “Ole #1” Hellberg who turned in a 12 Gm Pt, 6 W, +50 Sprd Pts card.  Martin continues to be on a role in the last two weeks finishing 4th last week and 3rd this week.  He started off in the wrong column tonight by losing the first game by 2 points and following that up with a 7 point loss in his next game.  He apparently found the telephone booth and changed into his superman outfit and put together a respectible 5 game win streak in which he played a tough crowd in John “Saweet” Hensley, John “Rotten” Reed, and Shirley “Buzz Saw” Guest.  He lost a very close game to his nephew Aaron Drivdahl (Guest) who was invited to the club by Jeremy.  Martin finished strong with a win over “Lethal” Lisa Duff.  Good job Martin!

Fourth was Jeremy “The Cat” Morris who turned in a 12 Gm Pt, 6 W, -01 Sprd Pts card.  Jeremy started off on the right foot with wins in the first two games including a salt in the wound win over John “Saweet” Hensley when Jeremy drew 16, 12, and 24 point hands coming down the stretch.  Jeremy quickly hit a brick wall when he was dealt a 43 point loss to John “Rotten” Reed in the third game.  Turning things around, Jeremy beat his next opponent only to come up a little short (4 points) against “Lethal” Lisa Duff in Game 5.  Sitting at 3 wins and 2 losses gong in to the 6th game, Jeremy took it up a notch and won 3 of the last 4 games to turn in a 12 point card.  Not the most impressive 12 point card….-1 spread point….none the less, good job Jeremy!

28/29 POOL

Shirley “Buzz Saw” Guest held on to 3-5’s and a face card and cut a 2.  “Trooper” Tom Varnell held onto a true gem with 3-5’s and a J of the right suite for a shot at a 29 and cut a 2.  The 28/29 pool started at $489 and received $15 to finish at $504.  The 28/29 pool is capped until someone hits a 28/29 hand.

CRIBBAGE TIPS BY MICHAEL SCHELL

Defending against a two-on-one

Here's a situation you'll occasionally find yourself in as dealer. It's the first hand of the game, and you deal yourself 2c 3d 4s 5h 10c Qs, from which you toss 5-10. Pone cuts the Jd and leads the 3h. Rather than pair his 3, you prudently play your Q. Pone pairs it with the Qh. Since pone's first two cards were both hearts, you decide to play your 3 next. That way, if pone does have a heart flush, he'll be unable to peg two points here (he's already played the 3h, and the 5h is sitting in your crib).

Instead, pone says "go", so you're stuck playing another low card. Neither one gets a 31-2, so does it matter which one you play?

Yes it does! Or at least, it might. Pone has stolen last card, and will have a two-on-one on the next play series. Since he said "go" with the count at 26, he obviously has nothing lower than a 6. There's no way he can trap your last card into a run, and there's nothing you can do about the one point he's guaranteed to peg at the end, but there is something you can do to keep him from pegging a 15-3. Play your 2 here instead of your 4.

If you save your 4 for last, there is no combination of cards that pone can hold that would let him peg a 15-3. But if you save your 2 for last, pone will score a 15-3 if his last two cards are 6-7, a combination consistent with having a heart flush.
