Ms. Sweety
got off to a slow start and practically took the night off! She waited until Game 6 to visit Pat
“Driller” Jungmann and helped him secure the win over “Lethal” Lisa Duff. Ms. Sweety then headed over to Martin
“Ole #1” Hellberg in Game 7 but didn’t help Martin beat Mike “Mr.
Quizno’s” Clapper. Ms. Sweety then
decided that Martin was good company and stayed with him in Game 9 for his
second 24 of the night and this time it helped Martin win the game over “Trooper”
Tom Varnell. Martin held onto her
for the rest of the night for a hard earned $14.
EVENT HAPPENINGS
First
was
John "Saweet” Henlsey who turned in a 16 Gm Pt, 8 W, +76 Sprd Pts
card tonight. John was on fire
tonight, only losing one game overall.
He out pegged his opponents on the way to 8 wins including winning four
of those games by less than 6 points.
Every point counts! His only
loss was against Dick “The Grumbler” Taylor in Game 3. He finished the night with 6 straight
wins. Good job John, looks like you are
back in the hunt for 1st Place overall!
Second was “Bad” Betty
Morehouse who turned in a 15 Gm Pt, 7 W, +103 Sprd Pts card. Betty
started the night off with a win but then wound up losing a close 2nd
game by 2 points to Dick “The Grumbler” Taylor. She put together a 5 game win streak
including a skunk over David “Da Boz” Bosley in Game 4. Her only other loss of the night came when
she crossed paths with John “Saweet” Hensley in Game 7. She finished the night strong with 2
wins. Good job Betty!
Third was Dick
"The Grumbler" Taylor who turned in a 15 Gm Pt, 7 W, +97 Sprd Pts
card. This was Dick’s second week in a
row finishing in 3rd Place.
He missed out on 2nd place by a narrow 6 points!. Dick started the night with a first game
skunk over “Easy” Ed Baustian.
He won the next two games to have 3 wins and 0 losses. Then Dewayne “Big E” Eisenbarth
outpegged Dick for a 2 point victory in Game 4. Dick nearly skunked his next two opponents. Just when he thought he was in the clear, Wayne
“Super Trooper” Von Clasen burned around the board to hand Dick his second
loss of the night. Dick finished strong
with 2 wins at the end of the night.
Good job Dick, keep up the good peggin’!
Fourth was Dewayne “Big E” Eisenbarth who turned in a 11 Gm Pt, 5 W, +51
Sprd Pts card. Dewayne started the
night off with a 1st game skunk over Shirley “Buzz Saw” Guest. Dewyane out pegged his next opponent and was
setting at 5 points after his first games.
He couldn’t outrun the law and “Trooper” Tom Varnell pulled him
over and beat Dewayne by 7 points. Then
started the roller coaster ride for Dewayne.
He beat Dick “The Grumbler” Taylor by a slim 2 points but the
turned around and lost to “Lethal” Lisa Duff by 2 poiints. Dewayne won games 6 & 7 only to lose
games 8 & 9. When the smoke
cleared, Dewayne edged out Mike “Mr. Quizno’s” Clapper for 4th
Place. Good job Dewayne!

Setting traps in pegging can net tidy sums of points and can be the deciding factor in the game. The easiest card to trap is the 5, the next easiest to trap is the J, then the A, the 2, and then the 3.
Trapping the 5 when you're the dealer: the key is at least two cards that combine with a 5 to form a run (3-4, 4-6, 6-7) and then pegging so that Jake cannot safely dump his 5 (or 5s) without risking retaliation of a pair or run. Let's go through one example of the dealer trapping a 5: you are the dealer and hold 3-6-7-8. Jake leads a K. Respond with your 8 for 18. Jake may dump his 5 here, but the odds are he will play an x ("ten" card) trying for the go at the count of 28. You then play your 3 for 31. The trap is sprung. Unless Jake is a very shrewd player, he will probably lead his remaining x at this point, and you follow with your 7 for 17. Jake's trapped 5 is played for 22 and you follow with your 6 for a run of three and a go -- scoring four points. This trap nets five or six points, and results in Jake being blanked.
