Ms.
Sweety could have taken the first half of the evening off....she didn't make an
appearance until Game 6 when she visited Martin "Ole #1" Hellberg.
Unfortunately she was not good luck for Martin, he didn't win the game!
She didn't take long to move on either....she headed Pat "Driller" Jungmann's
direction later in Game 6. Ms. Sweety helped Pat get the victory.....he
was playing Martin! Martin had the last laugh, he took Ms. Sweety back
from Pat in Game 7. Martin squeaked out the win in Game 7 and needed all
24 points, he beat his opponent by 1 point! Martin's glory didn't last
long. "Easy" Ed Baustian declared 24 in Game 8 and held onto her
for the rest of the night for a hard earned $16.
EVENT HAPPENINGS
First was John "Rotten" Reed who turned in a
18 Gm Pt, 8 W, +103 Sprd Pts card tonight.
John was on a role tonight, you didn't want to play him if you could avoid
it....he won 8 of 9 including 2 skunks. He beat his 8 opponents by nearly
20 points a game! His only blemish came at the hand of Martin "Ole #1"
Hellberg who pegged his way to a 54 point victory over John. None the
less, John recorded a 18 point card which ties (Pat "Driller" Jungmann in
week 4) the high point total for this season. Good job John!
Second was Jim "Teacher" Duff who
turned in a 16 Gm Pt, 7 W, +52 Sprd Pts card. Jim pegged his way to a 16
point card that would have been enough for 1st Place most other nights. He
started by beating the first 5 opponents including a skunk over "Lethal" Lisa
Duff.....I bet it was a cold night out back in the dog house later that
night! John "Rotten" Reed played spoiler by skunking
Jim in Game 6 for Jim's first loss. Jim went on to win a close Game 7 and
skunk his opponent in Game 8. Jim let his guard down in the last game and
"Easy" Ed Baustian out pegged him. Good job Jim!
Third was Dick "The Grumbler" Taylor who turned in
a 14 Gm Pt, 6 W, +63 Sprd Pts card. Dick
started off on the wrong foot by losing the first two games of the night.
He turned things around by winning the next three games including a skunk over
Helen "The Hellion" Daniels in Game 4. He then lost to Wayne
"Super Trooper" Von Clasen in Game 6. Sitting a 3 and 3 on the night,
Dick pegged his way to 3 straight wins including a Game 9 skunk over Zeke "Da
Zapa" Blocklinger. Good job Dick!
Fourth was Shirley "Buzz Saw" Guest who turned in a 13 Gm Pt, 6 W,
+06 Sprd Pts card. Shirley started the night by
winning 6 of the first 7 games including a skunk in Game 7 over "Bad" Betty
Morehouse. Shirley also squeaked out a 3 point victory over
"Trooper" Tom Varnell in Game 4. She had 13 points going into the last
2 games of the night but ran into Zeke "Da Zapa" Blocklinger and John
"Rotten" Reed and got beat in both games. Because of the 3 point
victory she separated herself from a pack of 11 point cards to take 4th place.
Good job Shirley!

Below is a situation where you are dealt a 19 hand in a situation, which
cards would you discard?
A-2-9-10-Q-K
Situation A: You are the nondealer at hole 16 while the dealer is at hole 17. What will be your discard?
Situation B: You are the dealer at hole 16 while the nondealer is at hole 17. What will be your discard?

Solutions
Situation A: Q-K is the best discard. It's the beginning of the game and your opponent would need a J cut as the Starter. Although this will happen occasionally, by making this discard you not only keep pegging cards but also possibilities for runs. In addition, the 9-2 and 10-1 add up to 11 points each and will help you peg a few points.
Situation B: Since it is your Crib you will need to throw the discard which will give you the best opportunity for points. You should discard the 9-10.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Zeke "Da Zapa" Blocklinger was the head judge tonight, thanks for your help. 16 weeks down, 20 to go.....
