”Trooper” Tom Varnell speeds away from the competition to finish in 1st with a 16 point card.  Not far behind, John “Rotten” Reed gave Tom a run for his money but came up short.  David “Da Boz” Bosley gets back to the winners circle with a 3rd Place finish.  Dick “The Grumbler” Taylor continues his hot streak by finishing in 4th Place.

Ms. Sweety didn’t move around too much tonight but saw some smiles and frowns in the few times she did move.  She took the early part of the evening off and waited until Game 6 when Helen “The Hellion” Daniels counted a 24.  Unfortunately, the 24 didn’t bring Helen any luck and she lost the game.  Next Ms. Sweety headed over to see Zeke “Da Zapa” Blocklinger in Game 8.  Again, Ms. Sweety didn’t help Zeke win the game.  Adding insult to injury, 1 deal after Zeke counted his 24, Martin “Ole #1” Hellberg declared a 24.  She didn’t have to travel far, Zeke was sitting to the right of Martin when this happened and quietly placed Ms. Sweety by Martin’s feet.  This time she brought luck with her as Martin was able to defeat his opponent.  For his skill cards, Martin went home was $16 and a smile.

EVENT HAPPENINGS

            First
was “Trooper” Tom Varnell who turned in a 16 Gm Pt, 7 W, +133 Sprd Pts card
tonight.  Tom got off to a fast start as he didn’t hold back on new member Aaron Drivdahl by nearly double skunking him in the first game.  The cribbage god’s brought Tom back from cloud nine with a loss in the second game.  Tom beat a couple of the top 5 points leaders in the next two games, John “Saweet” Hensley and Pat “Driller” Jungmann but couldn’t catch up to John “Rotten” Reed in Game 5.  Tom put together a 4 game win streak to end the night including a skunk over Martin “Ole #1” Hellberg.  Tom average win came by a margin of 24 points!  Good job Tom, keep up the good peggin’!

Second was John “Rotten” Reed who turned in a 14 Gm Pt, 7 W, +59 Sprd Pts card.  This is John’s third straight 2nd Place in club play dating back to January 25.  John started off the night hot by winning 7 straight.  He didn’t have it easy either….he had to play a tough crowd that started with Helen “The Hellion” Daniels and had other tough competitors with John “Saweet” Hensley and Pat “Driller” Jungmann.  If that wasn’t enough, he had to play “Trooper” Tom Varnell and was one of only two players to beat Tom.  His highlights came to an end when “Bad” Betty Morehouse played spoiler in Game 8 by beating John.  To add salt to the wound, “Easy” Ed Baustian didn’t take it “Easy” on John in Game 9 and handed John his second loss of the night.  None the less, John held on to a 14 point card at the end of the night which was enough for 2nd place and got him within striking distance of 1st Place in the club point race.  Good job John!

Third was David “Da Boz” Bosley who turned in a 14 Gm Pt, 6 W, +69 Sprd Pts card.  David returned to his old ways by turning in a respectable 14 point card.  He was edged out by John by the number of wins.  David started the night on the wrong foot.  He lost his first game but quickly made up for it by winning three straight.  Two of the three wins were skunks!  He then lost a close game (1 point) to “Big” Willie Evans (visitor) in Game 5.  Not being one to stay down for very long, David turned the heat up by winning 3 straight again.  Sitting at 14 points with one game to go, David’s chances at 1st Place were spoiled by Martin “Ole #1” Hellberg.  David’s average win margin was nearly 21 in his 6 wins.  Good job David!

Fourth was Dick “The Grumbler” Taylor who turned in a 13 Gm Pt, 6 W, +52 Sprd Pts card.  Dick out pegged his opponents in the first two games of the night and recorded a victory in each game by 2 points!  Dick was out pegged in the third game by a meager 3 points.  His positive points after 3 games was +4, negative points were -3….that’s is the definition of good games!  Dick put together a 3 game win streak including a skunk over Zeke “Da Zapa” Blocklinger who had a tough night (1 win).  Dick lost Game 7 and then showed no mercy on new member Aaron Drivdahl in Game 8 by beating him.  Dick couldn’t pull out the victory in Game 9 against Helen “The Hellion” Daniels.  Good job Dick, keep up the hard work…..you are on a role!

STRATEGY

            Which is the best lead a 6 or a 9?  What about a 7 or an 8?

6 vs. 9…hands down the 6 wins this match especially if you are in a defensive position.  If you lead a 9 your opponent has 2 chances of getting 6 points or more (9 6 6 6 for 8 points) or (9 9 9 x for 6 points).  By leading the 6 the non dealer and dealer will trade 2 points without the possibility of getting 6 or more points (6 9 9 x).

7 vs. 8…this may seem like the two are very similar leads but there is a bid difference when you in a defensive position.  It should be noted that neither of the 7 and 8 are the worst leads in the deck other than a 5.  Your opponent has a chance at 15 with the possibility of setting up a run.  The 8 wins for the better lead.  There are two options with a 7 lead of 4 points or more (7 8 9 7) or (7 8 9 6).  If the 8 is lead there is only one chance at 4 points or more (8 7 9 6).

Think about the subtle differences before leading a 6, 7 , 8, or 9 next time you have those cards in your hand.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Be sure to welcome new club member Aaron Drivdahl when you get a chance.  Aaron has ties to the club in a variety of ways.  He is Martin’s nephew and he works with Jeremy.  We will assign a nickname the first time he places in the payout positions.  His wife is already emailing Jeremy a few good ones!  Aaron graduated from WSU a few years ago and is a big-time Cougar fan!
