Linville Gorge Wilderness

The Linville Gorge Wilderness is 10,975 acres of wilderness located in the mountains of western North Carolina in eastern Pisgah National Forest. The gorge is bounded by Jonas Ridge on the east and Linville Mountain on the west. The Linville River cuts through the middle dropping over 2,000 feet in a rush from Linville Falls, NC to Lake James.

A dense hardwood and pine forest covers a wilderness trail network following the rim and connecting the river with many notable features, including Shortoff Mountain, Table Rock Mountain, Hawksbill Mountain, Sitting Bear Mountain, Wiseman's View, etc. Elevations range from 1,300 feet on the river to over 4,120 feet on top of Sitting Bear. The gorge is one of the most rugged and wild areas of the eastern United States. Many of the trails are primitive in nature and extremely steep. Trails are not formally blazed.
