Clara Christina Salzmann was born in Cuba City, Grant Cty, WI December 16, 1920. Clara died September 1,
2005 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Cty, WI, at 84 years of age. Telegraph Herald September 3, 2005 MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Sister Clara
Salzmann, SDS, 84, of Milwaukee, died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital, Milwaukee, with Sister Maureen Hopkins
and the hospital chaplain praying at her bedside. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anne's Salvatorian Campus Chapel, Milwaukee,
where friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee. She was born on Dec. 16, 1920, in
Dickeyville, Wis., diocese of La Crosse, daughter of Adolph and Anna (Averkamp) Salzmann. She entered the congregation on Sept. 12, 1936, in
Milwaukee, and was invested as a novice on Aug. 12, 1937, receiving Ambrose as her religious name. She returned to her baptismal name after
Vatican II. She made her first profession of religious vows on Aug. 13, 1938, and her final vows on Aug. 13, 1944, both in Milwaukee. For
the first 35 years of her apostolic service in the congregation, Sister Clara was an elementary teacher and/or principal in our schools in
Wisconsin, Maryland and South Dakota. Preparation for this ministry was received at Marquette University in Milwaukee, where she earned her
bachelor of arts degree and a permanent teacher's license. In 1975, after some training at the Wausau Technical School, she was asked to
serve as provincial accountant, which she did very faithfully until 1992 when she retired from this position. Just prior to retirement,
Sister Clara was able to go on a heritage trip to Germany, Rome and the Holy Land. She said in her oral history, "The peak of that tour was
when we met the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, at the Vatican for an afternoon conference. I was privileged to speak with him and shake
hands because I was in a wheelchair and was very close to the stage." Retirement for Sister Clara did not mean inactivity. She had a great
zest for life and many varied interests. She was prayerful and happy when she could be helpful to others. Surviving are sisters and a
brother, Catherine Lange, John (Mary) Salzmann, Helena Lawinger and Rita (Edward) McKeon; a sister-in-law, Lillian Salzmann; many nieces and
nephews; and the Sisters of the Divine Savior. She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Anne Salzmann; brothers, Joseph and Fr.
Edmund; a sister, Marion Lange; and brothers-in-law, Bill Lawinger, Ervin Lange and Arnold Lange.
