Dubuque Telegraph Herald August 4, 1999 Bernard A. Averkamp, 72, of Benton, died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Benton, with the Rev. Daryl Furlong, of St. Patrick's, Janesville, and the Rev. Richard Lenarz, of St. Patrick's, Benton, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where there will be a Benton Veterans of Foreign Wars service at 6:30 p.m., and a scripture wake service at 6:45 p.m., by the Rev. Daryl Furlong. He was born on June 24, 1927, in Dickeyville, son of Anton and Catherine (Reuter) Averkamp. He married Carol Furlong, of Hazel Green, on Aug. 1, 1953, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Hazel Green. They farmed in Vinegar Hill after their marriage for a number of years. They then farmed near Shullsburg, until his early retirement due to a disability. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Benton, and the Benton VFW, where he was past commander for seven years. Surviving are his wife, Carol; three sons, Kevin (Kathy) Averkamp, of Dubuque, Tony (Sherry) Averkamp, of Belmont, and Roger (Lisa) Averkamp, of Leadmine; a daughter, Vicki (Mark) Richardson, of Benton; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Edward, of Genoa, Joseph (Donna), of Oshkosh, Dennis (Ruth), of Shullsburg, and Eugene (Kathy) of Clay Center, Ohio; and two sisters, Catherine Geltz, of Menominee, Mich., and Lucy Berra, of Genoa. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Genevieve Walton, Marie Curtiss and Marjorie Beau; and two granddaughters, Melinda Mae Averkamp and Diana Carol Richardson.
