San Francisco Chronicle January 22, 2008 Laurel Olive Luebs Laurel Olive Luebs, 85, a longtime Palo Alto resident, died of complications of pneumonia on January 18. She was born May 6, 1922, in Clark, SD, and grew up in Lincoln, NE. After graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1943, she took the train to California to join her new husband, Robert Luebs, who was stationed at Stanford University in the Army's Area and Language program. They spent a happy eight months in Palo Alto until Laurel returned to Lincoln to give birth to their first child. After Bob's discharge from the Army in 1945, they decided to return to the Bay Area, finally settling in Palo Alto permanently in 1951. They raised four daughters, all of whom graduated from Palo Alto High School. One of Laurel's favorite things about living in California was the profusion of flowers and beautiful plants and trees in all seasons. She enjoyed working in her own garden (cymbidium orchids were a specialty), but also loved the flowers in public places, street trees, and the redwoods, especially Portola State Park and Yosemite. Other interests included reading, opera, baseball (she was a true Giants fan, proud of the fact that she and Willie Mays shared the same birthday), and collecting paper dolls. She was a Girl Scout leader for over 10 years. For the last several years she worked on writing her Life Story through a program at Foothill College, leaving a wonderful legacy to her family. She is survived by her brother, Robert Morrison of Cobb; three daughters, Barbara Luebs (Jim Allen) of Los Altos, Margaret Luebs-Goedecke (Walter) of Boulder, CO, and Nancy DuPuy (Rick) of Santa Clara; four grandchildren, Risa Morris (Greg) of Los Angeles, Daniel Goldberg (Melva) of Redondo Beach, and Matthew and Lauren Allen of Los Altos; three great-grandchildren, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and her eldest daughter, Jenny Goldberg. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
