81. Jane (Jennie)6 Harkness (Christina5 Coulthart, John4, John3, John2, Christopher1) was born in Middleburg, VT January 23, 1848. Jane died July 9, 1924 in Northfield, Rice Cty, MN, at 76 years of age. Her body was interred in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield, MN.

She married William Nathaniel Hunter in Rudolph, Wood Cty, WI, December 10, 1873. William was born in Winchester, Dundas Cty, ON December 10, 1846. William was the son of William Hunter and Jane Coulthart. William died August 31, 1915 in Sciota, Dakota Cty, MN, at 68 years of age. His body was interred in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield, MN. Northfield Independent September 2, 1915 William N. Hunter. William N. Hunter, one of the prominent farmers and a leading Holstein breeder of this community, died early Tuesday morning at 12.40 o'clock. His death followed a stroke of apoplexy Friday evening. He had been in good health and had spent most of the day Friday in the harvest field. His sudden taking off was a shock to his family and friends, and his death is a distinct loss to the community. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Hunter home on Stanton road. The internment will be Oaklawn cemetery. Mr. Hunter was born Dec. 10, 1846, at Winchester, Ont., and came to Minnesota with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Hunter, when 16 years of age. He was married Dec. 10, 1873, to Miss Jean Harkness of Grand Rapid, Wis., and the couple have since made their home in this community. Six children were born to the union, as follows; Maggie May, who died in 1904; Etta B., William F. Jesse J., Walter T., and James E., all of this community. Mrs. Hunter also leaves three brothers, John, James, and Walter Hunter, and two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Gibson and Mrs. Frank Harkness, all of this vicinity. Mr. Hunter was a veteran of the Civil war, having served three years as a volunteer in Company A, Seventy Minnesota regiment, which was attached to the Sixteenth army corps, under the command of Gen. Thomas. The principal engagements in which he took part were the battle of Nashville and the siege of Chattanooga. He was a member of the local G.A.R. organization. Northfield News July 11, 1924 OBITUARY Mrs. Jennie Hunter Mrs. Jennie Hunter died Wednesday evening at 8:00 o'clock at the Hunter home on Stanton road, after an eight months' illness. Funeral services will be held this afternoon (Friday) at the Hunter home, Rev. J.A. Rinkel officiating. The internment will be in the Oaklawn cemetery. Mrs. Hunter who was seventy-six years old, had been a resident of Northfield community for fifty two years. She is survived by four sons and one daughter. Mr. Hunter died nine years ago.

Northfield News December 14, 1939 Death Come to Etta B. Hunter Beloved Former Teacher Dies Tuesday at Farm Home on Stanton Road. Miss Etta B. Hunter, a respected resident of Northfield Community for many years died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 12, 1939, at her farm home on Stanton road. Miss Hunter had an attack of influenza in April and complications followed. She has been confined to her bed since July. Etta Barbara Hunter, the daughter of Wm. N. and Jennie (Harkness) Hunter, was born July 8, 1875, in Sciota township, Dakota county. She lived there during her early life, later teaching for twenty-three years in Blackman, Becksted and Lewiston schools and for three years in the schools in Farmington. In 1905 the family to their present home four miles from Northfield. After the death of their mother in 1923, Miss Hunter kept the home and lovingly cared for her brothers. She was an active member of the Woman's Union of the Methodist church and the Degree of Honor lodge. For a number of years she taught the Maple Grove Sunday school. Funeral Thursday. Funeral will held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and at 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist church, with the Rev. LeRoy H. Klaus officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery. Pallbearers will be C.A. Bierman, C. C. Carlaw, Chris N. Peterson, Thos. Warner, W.S. Errington and E.H. Watson. Surviving Miss Hunter are three brothers, Walter T. James E. Hunter at home and Wm. Francis of Prior Lake. Preceding Miss Hunter in death were one brother, Jesse, who died January 10, 1939, the mother in 1923, the father in 1915, and a sister Maggie May, in 1903. Miss Hunter was gifted and able teacher and there are many in this community who look back with appreciation on their contacts with her. In her home, in the church, and in the community she bore her part with a gracious spirit and an intelligent outlook that will make her death a great loss to relatives and friends.

child 172 iv. Jesse John Hunter was born in Sciota, Dakota Cty, MN March 8, 1882. Jesse died January 10, 1939 in Sciota, Dakota Cty, MN, at 56 years of age. His body was interred in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield, MN. The News January 12, 1939 Jesse J. Hunter Dies Unexpectedly Tuesday Evening Funeral services for Jesse J. Hunter who died suddenly Tuesday evening, Jan 10, 1939, at his farm home in Sciota township, Dakota county, will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Hunter Brothers farm, four miles east of Northfield on the Stanton road. The Rev. LeRoy H. Klaus will officiate. Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery. Mr. Hunter had been in his usual good health and was shopping in town Tuesday afternoon with his brother Walter T. Hunter. They had returned to their farms and Mr. Hunter was in the barn milking when taken ill. He was able to reach the house and telephoned his brother, who went over immediately. Mr. Hunter died suddenly from a heart attack. Jesse John Hunter, the son of William N. and Jennie (Harkness) Hunter, was born March 8, 1882, on the farm where he has spend his entire life. He was chairman of Sciota town board on which he had served for twelve years. He had been a member of the school board for twenty years. Mr. Hunter is survived by his sister, Miss Etta B. Hunter and three brothers, William F., Walter T. and James E. Hunter.

child 173 v. Walter Tweed Hunter was born in Sciota, Dakota Cty, MN April 29, 1884. Walter died June 25, 1946 in Sciota, Dakota Cty, MN, at 62 years of age. His body was interred in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield, MN. The News July 4, 1946 Walter T. Hunter Funeral services were held Friday June 28, for Walter T. Hunter, lifelong resident of the Northfield community who died at noon, Tuesday, June 25, as the result of a heart attack. He was 62 years of age. Tho Mr. Hunter had been ill for some time, death was unexpected coming to him in the farmyard of W. S. Errington. He had just climbed into the Errington truck with William Errington, Jr., intending to accompany him to South St. Paul with a load of cattle. The Rev. Paul M. Wilkinson, pastor of the Northfield Methodist church conducted the services held at 1:30 at the Bierman Mortuary and a t 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist church. Mrs. C.H. Gingrich and Mrs. Kenneth Wegner sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," "In the Garden," and "Saved by Grace," accompanied by Mrs. Chester Fox. Burial was at Oaklawn cemetery with Governor Edward Thye, a farm neighbor, Tom Warner, Casper Petersen, William Errington, Charles Taylor and Nick Lindenfelser as pallbearers. Those from away attending the funeral were Mrs. George Frame and two children of St. Paul. Mrs. and Mrs. Stanley Hunter of Minneapolis and Louie Burns of Windom. Mr. Hunter well known in the community as "Tweed" Hunter, was born April 29, 1884, in Sciota township, Dakota county, the son of William N. and Jennie Harkness Hunter. He attended the rural schools in Sciota township and farmed the remainder of his life. He followed his father's interests, becoming a breeder of Holstein cattle. He was a member of the Methodist church and had served on the rural school board. Surviving Mr. Hunter are his brother, James E. Hunter, with whom he had been farming, and two nephews. Wendell E. Hunter and Ethelbert Francis Hunter of Roseburg, Ore. Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, Maggie May and Etta, and two brothers, Jesse John and W. Francis Hunter.

child 174 vi. James Eugene Hunter was born in Sciota, Dakota Cty, MN August 29, 1886. James died April 4, 1954 in Northfield, Rice Cty, MN, at 67 years of age. His body was interred in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield, MN. The News April 8, 1954 James E. Hunter As the result of a heart attack, James E. Hunter, 67 year old Sciota township farmer, died Sunday, April 4 at Northfield hospital. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon, April 6, in the Northfield Methodist church, the Rev. Richard G. Douglas officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Haines sang the funeral hymns; Mrs. Chester Fox at the organ. Internment was in Oaklawn cemetery with Charles Taylor, Max Warner, Fred Nelson, Casper Peterson, H.B. Jacobson and Wm. Errington as pallbearers. James Eugene Hunter was born August 29, 1886 in Sciota township, Dakota county, the son of William N. and Jennie Harkness Hunter. He attended the Lewiston school in the township and continued to farm in the community his entire life. He never married. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Maggie M. and Etta B. Hunter; three brothers, William Francis, Jesse John, and Walter Tweed Hunter. He is survived by two nephews, Ethelbert F. Hunter of Shakopee and Wendell E. Hunter of Northfield and their families.
