Virgil died December 11, 2004 in Green Bay, Brown Cty, WI, at 87 years of age. Her body was interred December 15, 2004 in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.

She married Alfred VanEss in Champion, Kewaunee Cty, WI, January 13, 1942. Alfred was born in Champion, Kewaunee Cty, WI November 21, 1916. Alfred was the son of Henry VanEss and Mary Loritz. Alfred died June 26, 2004 in Green Bay, Brown Cty, WI, at 87 years of age. His body was interred June 29, 2004 in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. Green Bay Press Gazette June 28, 2004 Van Ess, Alfred J. Alfred J. Van Ess, 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 26, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 21, 1916, to the late Henry and Mary (Loritz) Van Ess in Champion, Wis. On January 13, 1942, he married Virgil Gilson at St. Hubert Church in Rosiere, Wis. Alfred was in the U.S. Army during World War II. During his 3-year tour of duty in the European Theatre, he was involved in several of the major battles of the conflict including the Battle of the Bulge in Bastoine, Belgium, a turning point of the war, and was decorated for his bravery and heroism. In 2001, he received a distinguished commendation award from the French government for his involvement in the liberation of Europe. Alfred was a dedicated member of Ss. Peter & Paul Church. In addition to helping out for specific events, including decorating the church for Christmas and Easter and helping to prepare for the annual parish picnic, Alfred was a dedicated usher, volunteered to open the church every morning, and assisted with many other areas of need. He loved his church. Alfred retired from American Can/James River Corporation in 1981, after 36 years of dedicated service. He always had a green thumb for gardening and for tending his huge flowerbeds. In addition, Alfred was an avid reader, and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, by whom he will be deeply missed. Alfred is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virgil; one daughter, Lois (Roger) Bader, Green Bay; three grandchildren, Aaron Bader, Arlington Heights, Ill., and Garritt and Jordan Bader, both of Green Bay; One brother, Richard (Marjorie) Vanness, Champion, and one sister, Rita Strebel, Green Bay; Sisters-in-law Madeline Gerondale, Marie Gerondale and Arlene (Ervin) Konop. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harry (Dorothy), George (Dorothy), Raymond and Frank, and two sisters, Orpha (George) Vincent and Lillian (Walter) Prevost; brothers and sisters-in-law Fritz Strebel, Melvin (Madeline) Gerondale, Wallace (Marie) Gerondale and Lillian and Joe Vandertie. Friends may gather from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 28, 2004, at MALCORE Funeral Home, University Avenue at North Baird Street. Parish wake service will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, with the Rev. Thomas Farrell celebrating, assisted by Deacon Michael Vincent. U.S. Army Military rites will follow the Funeral Mass. Entombment will be in the Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. She was born on Nov. 2, 1917, to the late Fabian and Clara (Jeanquart) Gilson in Rosiere, Wis. On Jan. 13, 1942, she married Alfred J. Van Ess at St. Hubert Church in Rosiere, Wis. Virgil was a loving mother who assisted her daughter, Lois, with her dance studio for many years, making costumes and assisting parents and students with their routines. She was one of Northeast Green Bay’s first Avon Ladies, a vocation she enjoyed for 49 years. Virgil also had the gift of crocheting, making many afghans, sweaters, scarves, baby blankets and caps for family, friends and many school and charitable organizations over the years. She was very proud of her doll collection, especially her Shirley Temple and Miss America Dolls. Virgil was a dedicated member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and a member of the Ladies Altar Society. She was often there to help with Easter and Christmas decorating, having used her sewing talents to assemble much of the decor itself. She loved colorful flowers, and along with Alfred, always had an array of them around their Elm Street home. Virgil is survived by her daughter Lois (Roger) Bader, Green Bay; three grandchildren, Aaron Bader, Arlington Heights, Ill.; Garritt Bader, Green Bay; and Jordan Bader, Madison; three sisters, Marie Gerondale, Madeline Gerondale, both of Green Bay and Arlene (Ervin) Konop, Stangleville, Wis; one sister-in-law, Rita Strebel, Green Bay; and one brother-in-law, Richard (Marjorie) Vanness, New Franken, plus many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, on June 26, 2004; one sister, Lillian (Joe) Vandertie; brothers-in-law, George, Raymond, Frank and Harry VanEss; and sisters-in-law, Orpha (George) Vincent and Lillian (Walter) Prevost. Friends may gather from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at MALCORE Funeral Home East, University Ave at N. Baird Sts. Parish wake service will be at 7 pm. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Ladies Altar Society will recite the Rosary in church prior to the mass. Mass of Resurrection will follow at 11 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, with the Rev. Thomas Farrell celebrating, assisted by Deacon Michael Vincent.
