Wisconsin State Journal November 19, 2006 MADISON - Harlan "Hal" David Crinion, age 82, formerly of Eau Claire and Naples, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, in Stoughton, from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Mr. Crinion was born in Beaver Dam, on June 13, 1924, the only son of Frederick W. and Amanda (Bruning) Crinion, deceased. He graduated from Beaver Dam High School in the class of 1942. After graduation, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he, like other men and women of his age and at that time, worked for the federal government in support of the war effort. He had fond memories of his time in Washington, D.C., and enjoyed reminiscing about the friendships made and the fun they had dancing to the live music of the "Big Bands" of that era. In 1943, he entered military service with the U.S. Army and became part of American's greatest generation. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, as a high speed radio operator, participating in campaigns on New Guinea, the island of Luzon and the liberation of the South Philippines, and further served in the occupation of Japan, having arrived with the occupation forces on Aug. 30, 1945. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in January 1946. Upon leaving military service, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, in 1950. He first worked for General Motors Corporation in its Janesville plant and subsequently for Armco Steel Corporation, Metal Products Division, as the sales engineer for the Eau Claire and northern Wisconsin region, until his retirement on his birthday in 1982. Mr. Crinion was a registered professional engineer in Wisconsin. Mr. Crinion was elected to the Eau Claire City Council from 1969 to 1977, and served as president from 1974 to 1976. He was proud of the city's economic development and downtown rehabilitation efforts during his council tenure, including construction of the civic center, parking ramp and Civic Center Inn, all of which were the nucleus for downtown re-vitalization. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying waterfowl, upland game and deer hunting and had a passion for freshwater fishing for bass, walleye, northern pike and muskellunge. He was an accomplished bridge player and enjoyed playing golf when he and Shirley moved to Florida for their retirement years. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Paff) Crinion of Stoughton; his daughters, Janette Y. Crinion (Karl Conditt) of Palmer, Alaska and Jacquelyn A. Crinion and Jo Ellen Crinion, both of Belleville; his son, Gregory P. Crinion (Suzanne) of Friendswood, Texas; his grandchildren, Laura Crinion and David Crinion; his sister, Shirley (Glenn) Eichenseer of Arlington, Mass. and Naples, Fla.; and by nieces, nephews, cousins and their families in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, Malaysia and Norway. He was preceded in death by his son, David, in 1958. A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2007 in Eau Claire, at a date and time to be announced. Donations may be made to the wildlife conservation organization, Ducks Unlimited, at www.ducks.org/support or 1-800-45-DUCKS.
