Todish and Toddish
Families
of North
America

This
Todish family tree started with the entering of data gathered by Kathy Todish
Obuchowski. Based on this data and
data gathered from various emails, obituaries and the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930
US Census I have created the following TODISH family tree with 863
descendants. I also must
acknowledge Marge Small for all of her help, she has made the family tree grow
by leaps and bounds.
The
US Census provides some valuable information; such as the date of entry into
the United States
by our ancestors, it also revealed some variations in spellings. It appears that some descendants use a
double “d” in their name.
On
the State of Michigan, Menominee
County, City of Menominee, Enumeration District 143, Sheet 8
we found the eldest Todish immigrant, John Toddish. According to the census John was born in
February 1844 and came from Germany
to the United States
in 1873. He also had been married
for 35 years. Listed under John was
May his wife born in 1848 and then 5 of his 9 living children; daughters Eva
and Agnes; sons George, Joseph and Frances. Listed just above John were his
daughter, Rose and her husband John Kruzel and their son Fred. Listed at the top of the next page was
another of John’s daughters, Katie, along with her husband John Suchorski
and their children daughter Sadie and sons Edward, David and Frank.
Also
on the next sheet of the census we found John’s brother Peter Toddish,
born in 1855 in Germany,
married for 20 years to Anna. Peter
arrived in the United States
in 1875, two years after John. In
addition to Anna listed under Peter were his 7 living children; his daughter
Rose and his sons Joseph, Frank, William, Stan, Peter and Victor, all born in
Michigan.
Further
down the page we found another brother Thomas Toddish, born in 1862 in Germany,
married for 10 years to Katie.
Thomas arrived in the United
States in 1883, ten years after John. In addition to Katie listed under Thomas
were his 5 children; daughters May, Victoria and Sophia; and sons Thomas and
Albert, all born in Michigan.
On
the State of Michigan, Menominee
County, City of Menominee,
Enumeration District 142, Sheet 9 we found George Todish, born in 1858 in Germany,
married for 17 years to Mary.
George arrived in the United
States in 1875. In addition to Mary listed under George
were his 7 children; sons Martin and Frank were listed on Sheet 9, while sheet
10 the other 5 children were listed, Ellen (Helen), John, Walter, Sophie and
George.
On
the State of Michigan, Saginaw
County, Taymouth Township,
Enumeration District 75, Sheet 3 we found Jacob Todish, born in 1847 in
Prussia/Poland, married for 31 years to Annie. Jacob arrived in the United States in 1870. In addition to Annie, son Kizer was
listed. Annie was mother of 9
children with 7 still living. One
of those living children was listed right below Kizer, Frank his wife Bertha
and their son Emil.
We
recently added a sister to the mix of Todish brothers, Mary. She married Andrew Sobay and our
evidence of her relation is her maiden name appearing on marriage documents of
her daughters as well as information from a niece, Sophie Todish Carter,
daughter of George Todish. Mary
(Maggie) and Andrew also appear on the 1990 Census in Menominee located between
Peter and Thomas.
We also recently acquired copies of the Intention to become
citizens of the United
States for the brothers and Andrew
Sobay. George Todish, Peter Todish,
John Todish and Tom Todish signed April 1, 1887 in Menominee County;
they all renounced the Emperor of Germany. Jacob Todish signed in Saginaw County
April 1882, while Andrew Sobay signed November 1891 in Menominee County.
