Green Lantern, 1960 series, issues 145-200: Hal faces several crises of faith in these issues. He is banished from Earth for a one year period by the Guardians, as punishment for choosing to aid Carol Ferris over a planet in trouble. While serving his penance, he is tested by the Guardians via an imaginery adventure, in which he must capture several rogue members of the GL Corps who have stolen "improved" power rings (with no yellow weakness.) After passing this test, he is allowed to return to Earth, but soon decides to give up being Green Lantern "forever" in order to have a normal life with Carol. John Stewart takes over, and is trained by Katma Tui, and the two fall in love. During the last few issues leading up to #200, the Crisis on Infinite Earths takes place, Guy Gardner is awakened from his coma and given a power ring, and Hal returns to save the day. In the final issue, the Guardians reveal that they and the Zamarons are in fact the same race, and they depart to see if they can produce offspring; they leave Appa Ali Apsa, the "Old Timer" from Hal and Ollie's days of trekking across America, in charge of the battery while they are gone, and the Green Lanterns to fend for themselves, lifting the "one GL per sector" rule.
