Frequently Asked Questions

What is CAAS?

CAAS stands for Constellation Analysis of Ancient Sites. A research project exploring the possible link between ancient architecture and extrinsic star constellations. It is a computer program that accepts a set of points and compares those points to constellations generated from the point of view of other star systems.

How does CAAS work?

The software uses an image comparison algorithm to look for a matching image in the sky patterns of foriegn stars. You can view an example of how the algorthm works here: ICdemo

What does it mean if there is a match?

That would be quite significant. Because the statistical odds of a match are so low, it would have to mean that somehow, the ancient site was layed out with knowledge that wasn't available until late in the 20th century-in other words, it would be concrete evidence that the this particular ancient civilization had access to knowledge they couldn't have.

Why should I expect this to work?

For the simple fact that essentially all cultures on Earth have been users of astronomy. Because of this universality, it is reasonable to expect civilizations from other planets to also use constellations as a way of mapping the sky.

Who can use this?

Anyone with access to a computer, a ruler, and a protractor.

Are you a Nut?

I wholly disassociate myself from all screwballs and groups of screwballs. I am scientist, a Christian, a father, married, and used to be a boyscout; pretty normal fair. But the simple fact is, the entire field has matured a great deal and it is now a time for some serious work to be done. If you can accept that SETI is a serious buisiness, then you can accept this.

Why do you need help?

Because there are A LOT of ancient sites to be explored. And my limited intellect is not nearly equipped to look at all the possible ways that constellational data could have been used by our ancestors. People with differing backgrounds and experiences will view the exact same objects and see different things, and what I want is discovery, so the more people exploring this the better. There is no shortage of things to be explored here.

IF I want help, why am I charging 5 dollars for the software?

I am completely non-profit, but the simple fact is that I have student loans to repay and I need to stay in the good graces of my wife. My education allowed me to develop this software and the concepts behind it, so it is incumbent on the fruits of my labor to help pay for it. It also allows me to continue developing the software in directions that I think will be important to the project. If you're not happy with it, I'll refund your money in full
