2005 Bastille Day - Display Samples Fougères, a small fortified castle, was constructed during the second half of the 15th century and in the beginning
of the 16th by three generations of a family of notables from Blois. The Castle of
Pierrefonds, next to Compiègne, was built in the 15th century by Philippe d' Orléans, and later demolished on order of Louis XIII. Napoleon III made Viollet-le-Duc
rebuild the castle into an imperial house in the 19th century. The castle of Rambouillet is
surrounded by a 20,000-acre forest, which is what remains of the former forest of the Yveline region. This hunting ground next to Paris attracted many kings, from François
I who died there to Charles X who abdicated there. It is here that the first g7 meeting and the Kosovo meeting took place.
