(DECEMBER) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God with us’).”  (Matthew 1:23) When sharing God’s Word with the unchurched, nothing can be assumed but at the same time we must never talk down to them.  At a “Bible/Talk Time” the above passage was used and many teens did not know who the “virgin” and the “son” are, and just about all had no idea what “Immanuel” meant.  What a joy for us to share the Good News with so many unchurched teens at THE ROC that the Son of God, Jesus, born of Mary, came among us to live and die in our place so that we would have eternal life.

Thank you so much for your gifts which are the main support of THE ROC (Recreation & Outreach Center) for Youth.  THE ROC cannot continue without your continued support.  Recently we have noticed a drop in support for THE ROC.  Please continue to give so that so many who don’t know Christ, their Savior, will come to trust and believe in Him.

THE ROC Annual Meeting will be held on January 23rd at 7:00 p.m.  Everyone is invited. All volunteers and board members are also invited to a Volunteer Appreciation Celebration held before the meeting from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

(NOVEMBER) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7) People, including teens, tend to focus on the outside of a person.  Often parents have difficulty as their teen wants particular and brand name clothes.  The teen expects ridicule or exclusion if he/she isn't wearing what is acceptable to other teens.  One of the most often comments we hear from teens who attend the ROC is, "At THE ROC I can be myself without worrying about constantly being judged by others.  It is so good to know that God loves me no matter what I am wearing or what I look like."  At THE ROC we constantly remind the teens of their beauty through Christ and faith in Him.  By His perfect life and sacrificial death we are clean.   Thanks be to God.

(OCTOBER) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       "Let your light shine"  (Matthew 5:16) If you are looking for a way to let your light of love and faith in Christ shine, THE ROC may be the place for you.  Janine Petrie, a ROC volunteer from our church, Hope Lutheran in Oconomowoc, says, "I have been volunteering at the ROC for ten years. It has been a blessing to see the teens grow into adults. I typically have helped on Friday or Saturday nights when the help is needed the most. That is when the largest amount of teens attend but the fewest volunteers sign up to help. After considering the gifts God has blessed me with I am now taking on the challenge of the craft projects with Ruth Uttech.  Now there is an even greater need for volunteers on Fridays and Saturday's. Would you consider the blessings God has given you and sign up to serve?  A couple, for example, could volunteer once a month.  If you are feeling unqualified, don't fear, God will make you qualified."

Pastor Mueller has declined his call to St. Matthew in Appleton, deciding to continue as the pastor/director of our ROC Youth Center.

PLEASE PUT THESE DATES ON YOUR SCHEDULE:

Thursday, October 13, 4-8 p.m. - Culvers will give 10% of sales to THE ROC

Sunday, June 11 - 2017 ROC Golf Outing

July 20-22 - 2017 ROC Rummage Sale

(SEPTEMBER) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."  (Psalm 119:105) TRUST in the power of GOD'S WORD.  As the Lord, through His Word, increases our love for Him and our faith in our Savior, we want to share Christ with others.  Over the 13 years THE ROC has been open we have learned how to share the Word of God with the unchurched teens in a way that is real.  The Word speaks to every situation in life - dating, a breakup, school, losing or winning a game, a relationship, reconciliation, a death, an illness, and of course forgiveness and eternal life through Christ, the only Savior.  How joyful it is to hear the teens respond with faith and a desire to serve such as helping keep THE ROC clean, community projects like RiverFest Serving, fund raising like the rummage sale and brat frys and much more.  May we never lose our confidence in the power of Christ and His Word.

Many hours of hard work were put in by so many at the ROC Rummage Sale which raised $12,153 for THE ROC.  Thank you to Trinity/St. Luke's for the use of their gym and thank you to all the volunteers (some literally gave hundreds of volunteer hours), those who donated items and the shoppers. Thank you so much!

(AUGUST) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        "so is my word that goes out from my mouth:  It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.." (Isaiah 55:11)  At the ROC Golf Outing Banquet, eight teens answered two questions for the audience, "Why do you attend THE ROC youth Center?" and "How has THE ROC helped you?"  The answers given all came from their hearts and touched us all.  Many of the teens spoke about the joy of Bible/Talk Time at THE ROC which we have every day THE ROC is open.  It was clear from the witness of the teens that God's Word was accomplishing God's purpose for His Word.  We are also thankful for the $9,735.85 raised for THE ROC from the Golf Outing, which includes a match of $5,000 from an individual donor. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard on the event and all those who donated to make it successful.

Remember to stop on Saturday, August 20th, at Glenn's Brat Haus.  ROC Staff and Teens will be serving from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  All proceeds will go to help fund our ROC Youth Center.  Any adults who would like to help are asked to call (206-9581 or 261-4444) or e-mail (wttnroc@gmail.com) Pastor/Director Mueller.  We truly need the help.  Thank you.

(JULY) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." (1 peter 3:15)  How wonderful it is to answer the teens at our ROC Youth Center by telling them about Christ, our and their Savior from sin.

The ROC rummage/bake sale will be held July 21,22 & 23 at the Western Avenue TSL gym.  Receiving of your gently used, clean and unbroken items will be on Sunday 7/17 from 12 - 5, Mon. & Tue. 7/18 & 7/19 from 8 - 5 and Wed 7/20 from 8 until NOON.  Bake sale items can be dropped off 7/20, 7/21 or 7/22 a.m.  We are sorry but we cannot accept old computers, large stereos, text books, large microwaves, TV's, weapons, organs, pianos, mattresses, tires, Readers Digest, Text books, Encyclopedias chemicals or anything we would have to pay to dispose of.  Also keep in mind that some of your donations may be put aside to price, for bids or to sell on EBay.  There is a great need for anyone who is able to do heavier lifting.  A lot of time is spent setting up for the sale, receiving and sorting items. (MAY) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        At our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (THE ROC) one of our programs is our After-School Fun Free Activity Program which is held on Fridays from 4:15-5:00 p.m.  The program is run by Brenda (Dunham) Scheunemann and Ruth Uttech.  Since Brenda will soon leave the team due to a new work commitment, we are looking for another person to help with the Activity Program.  Please see Pastor Mueller if you are interested.  A recent project, which as always is connected to God's Word, was making butterflies out of paper.  The butterfly has been a wonderful symbol of Christ's resurrection as life comes from the seemingly dead cocoon.  A participant made a large version to understand the folds better and was about to throw it away when one teen, who has learned God's Word only at the ROC, said, "On our hanging mobile, let's have the big one be Christ, and all the small ones be us."  Jesus said, "Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live." (John 14:19).

(APRIL) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1).   At a recent Bible/Talk Time, which we have every night our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (THE ROC) is open, a teen asked the question, "Do I have faith? I don't seem to feel any different."  Somewhere the teen had been given the impression that if you don't feel faith, you must not have it or if you don't feel forgiven, you must not be forgiven.  What comfort the teen received when he was told how faith is a gift from God through the Gospel and how it is simply a trust in God's promises.  Faith does not rest on our feelings or emotions but on God's Word.  Feelings, such as joy, flow at times, in different ways, out of faith but faith does not depend on them.  How joyful we are that faith rests on our Savior, Christ Jesus, who is THE ROCK.

(MARCH) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19).   Recently a group of teens from our Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center (THE ROC) was taken to church.  Baptism was highlighted in the service and after church five of the ROC teens wanted to be baptized.  Since many want to be baptized at THE ROC (their place of worship), we are looking to have a baptismal font at THE ROC that could be as simple as a bowl and bowl holder on a pedestal.  The bowl holder could be handmade possibly with an engraved cross or Bible passage.  Money is available for the materials.   Please let Pastor Mueller know if you have any ideas or would like to help.  The font will also serve as a constant visible reminder of Baptism for all teens who attend THE ROC.

FUTURE ROC EVENTS:  Please volunteer to help.  Thanks!

(FEBRUARY) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin." (By King David-Psalm 51:1,2).   "It happened on April 15th, 2006."  These were the words spoken by a past ROC teen as he recently stopped by at our ROC Youth Center at the exact time as we were having our Bible/Talk Time.  In front of all the teens at THE ROC, this young man was confessing his sin of breaking into THE ROC on April 15th, 2006 in the middle of the night.   He knew the very date because it had bothered him all this time and he needed to confess knowing God forgives him in Christ and that we would forgive him.  This man had been in jail for the crime but that didn't give him any comfort.  Only forgiveness in Christ was the answer as it was the answer for King David and for all of us.

March 31st - After this date your Thrivent Choice Dollars will expire and be lost.  THE ROC is an eligible organization for Thrivent Choice dollars (free money for Thrivent members to designate).  Designate your Thrivent Choice dollars by calling 1-800-847-4836 or by going to https://www.thrivent.com/thriventchoiceYou will find THE ROC by searching for "Watertown Recreation and Outreach Center for Youth".  Thanks so much.

(JANUARY) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC        "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:16).   Recently we once again took unchurched teens to a worship service at one of our Watertown WELS churches.  We helped guide the teens through the hymnal and service.  Many had never been to worship before.  It was a priceless moment when, at the end of worship, one of the teens leaned over and said, "I want to be baptized so I can have a better chance of getting into heaven".  Even though his words showed the need for further instruction, he had it right that Baptism saves.  The teen's request brought tears to a church member sitting behind us.  After instruction, the teen was baptized at our ROC Youth Center.

We have been forced to get a storage shed to store ROC items such as those used for the ROC Rummage Sale.  We will be paying $550.00/year for  a 20' x 12' space with 3 overhead doors for easy access.  If anyone could donate such a dry storage area the ROC could use permanently, please let us know by calling (920-206-9581) or e-mailing (wttnroc@sbcglobal.net) Pastor/Director Tim Mueller.

THE ROC Annual Meeting will be held on January 25th at 7:00 p.m.  Everyone is invited.
