2006 League News

There are lots of exciting changes this year that we hope will continue to improve the baseball experience for all players and families in the league. Please read about them below...

AGE CUTOFF CHANGE
This is the year of the age cutoff change across all youth baseball in the United States. The age cutoff changes to April 30th (previously was July 31). Essentially this means whatever age a player is on April 30th is their official league age. If the player turns a year older on May 1st or any time during the season, it does not matter since the league age is determined on April 30th. This may mean that a player may suddenly be year younger in League Age due to these changes. There will be some 12 year olds from last season who are eligible to return to Cal Ripken this year as a 12 year old again ...and there will be some players who turn 13 during the season.

ASSESSMENT CHANGES
Hollis Cal Ripken is working very closely with the Hollis Rec Rookie League and T-Ball program to better align the levels of play so there is an appropriate placement of players across both organizations.

  • 8 Year Olds - To achieve this goal, the skill level of all incoming Cal Ripken and Rookie League 8 year olds will be evaluated on assessment day by coaches from Cal Ripken and the Rookie League organization. At registration time, parents of 8 year old players will be able to select either Rookie League or to have their child assessed for Cal Ripken. The goal is to have the players in an environment that they can learn and is skill level appropriate. The players who requested to be assessed for Cal Ripken will be assessed and if appropriate placed onto a Cal Ripken Minors team. A player who is not placed onto a Minors team will be placed onto a Rookie league team. The age and physical maturity level difference between and 8 and 10 year old can be very large and the speed which some players can throw and hit the ball is very fast.
  • 10 Year Olds - For 10 year old players, parents will be able to select Minors or have their child assessed for Majors. The players will be assess and if appropriate, placed onto a Cal Ripken Majors team. A player not placed on a Major team will be placed on a Minors team. The goal is to make sure players are in the appropriate level for their skills.
  • 11 Year Olds - 11 year olds will be evaluated and primarily be placed in Majors but in the case of an 11 year old who may be a danger to themselves due to not having the skill level for Majors, the board reserves the right to place these players in the Minors, if appropriate, so they can develop in a more skill appropriate environment.
  • 9 Year Old & 12 Year Olds - 9 year olds will be placed in Minors and 12 year old players will be placed in Majors.

These assessment changes were recommended by many current and past coaches and parents and unanimously adopted by the board and supported by the Rookie League and Hollis Recreation department to improve the overall baseball experience for all players.

DRAFT CHANGES
The league has decided to re-draft both the Majors and Minors each year. The goal of drafting teams from scratch is to constantly strive to distribute the players as evenly as possible.
Last season the league completely re-drafted the Minors level for a variety of reasons with the overall goal to improve the balance and enjoyment for all players. This experience worked so well that we have decided to do this in both the Majors and Minors.

SEASON
In the past the season has begun after April vacation. This spring we will be attempting to begin games for the Majors level on April 15 depending on field conditions, but still taking the week of April vacation off. The Minors season will start after April vacation. We analyzed the number of games Hollis played compared to all the surrounding towns and found that we were playing fewer games than these other towns. The goal is to have the Majors play between 16-18 games in the season with mainly 3 games per week during the season. Minors will play 12-15 games.

SKILLS NIGHT
Another unique proposal that was presented to the Board and unanimously approved was the idea of a weekly skills night. The goal is to offer a Skills Night every week that Minors level players can attend. The program will be run by coaches and volunteers from the league. This will allow the Minors players to continue to work on skills throughout the season. Further details will be available at a later date but we will be looking to all coaches (Majors and Minors) to assist with this program.

COACHES CLINIC
We will hold a coaches clinic in early March for all coaches. More details of when and where will be available shortly.

UMPIRES
For 2006, the league has decided to try to get Patched Umpires behind the plate for Majors games. At this time we are attempting to find Patched umpires to cover these games. Also, prior to the season the league is attempting to put together an Umpire Clinic. The goal is to only have umpires behind the plate for Minors games who have attended this training. More details to follow at a later date...

RAFFLE
The league has decided to run a raffle as a fundraiser this season, replacing the Dinner Dance. The players will pre-purchase twenty-five $1 raffle tickets at registration time and they will be able to turn in the sold tickets during the season. The drawings for prizes will be held at the League Barbecue after the championship games.

LEAGUE BARBECUE
The league barbecue will change slightly this year. Please stay tuned for more details....
