Joseph Judson Byers, born 17 Jan. 1780 in South Carolina, was a minister in the Primitive Baptist Church at Mud Creek in Buncombe (now Henderson) County, NC from 1805 to 1816. They moved to Habersham County, Georgia by 1830. They  had ten children born
in Buncombe and Haywood County between 1805 and 1824.

Elder Joseph Byers combined ministry with farming and teaching school to support his family while pastor of small rural congregations. Although Joseph was raised Presbyterian, he had become baptized and followed the faith of the Primitive Baptist
Church. He became an ordained minister in 1802.  He was an important member of organizing committees to constitute Baptist churches. Joseph came to Alabama in about 1831 and settled in Jones Valley near Birmingham in Jefferson County.

Samuel Byers served in the Revolutionary War for York Co., SC as a horseman in Col. Thomas Neel's regiment of New Acquisition District Militia for 53 days under Lt. James Martin, and was at Brier Creek, Georgia, March 3, 1779 where the patriots
