Ordered our crate 302 from Ford Racing on Thursday, February 26th, 2004. Got a call from Conway Southern in Spartanburg on Tuesday, March 2, 2004 that our packages had arrived. Max at Five Star Ford in Scottsdale, Arizona did a great job helping us get what we needed.
Picked up the engine Thursday, March 4, 2004 (Thanks for the help, bro!). There are a few pictures below. Ford puts a lot of different markers on the engine as they do their quality control checks. I haven't cleaned the engine up yet, so it looks a little messy from all of that.
I know all of these pictures aren't terribly exciting, but I had a lot of questions about what I was getting for my money before I ordered it. Hopefully, these pictures can help someone else make the decision a little easier. The engine arrived in a sturdy crate made of 2 by 4's mounted on a pallet. It is mounted in an engine stand made of 2 by 8's and 2 by 6's. Overall great job by Ford. I am very happy I decided to go this route.
This is the Ford Racing GT-40 302 with an E-303 roller cam and GT-40 aluminum racing heads that Ford says is good for 340 crank horsepower. Dyno runs consistently put it in the 370 horse range with the right intake and exhaust. Dollar for dollar, I think it is one of the best performance bargains on the market. Can you imagine that much power in a car that only weighs around 2000 pounds? Of course, there is still a slew of items to add to the engine before it goes in the kit. Here are a few of them:
Anyway, we get
the thing unloaded, and Hootie leaves the house.
Thirty minutes later, the FedEx guy shows up with my GT-40 intake. He walks back
to the shop with the box and asks "You putting that thing in the
Civic?" (my 2002 Honda Civic daily driver). I said "No, I'm putting it
in a roadster." He says "Oh, you got a Miata too!"
