inhale/exhale is a video/sculpture installation environment that explores the simple and intimate act of taking a bath.
incandescent light increases and dims in slow succession around the room mimicking breath entering and exiting the body. the sound and rhythm of water
running/dripping/draining goes in and out of sync with the cadence of the light and video projections drawing attention to the viewers own body rhythms.
projected images and sound include water filling a bathtub with calming consistent regularity; water slowly gathering around the rim of a faucet to form
a drip that finally lets go; and water spiraling and funneling steadily down a drain…
the piece is intended to slow one down, encourage a sense of intimacy, instill self-awareness and reflection, and
persuade an impression of connection. I recognize the rarity of this effort in a post-postmodern culture that
prides itself on being demystified, but still I aspire…
we live in a culture that is marked by signs of dislocation and dysfunction and increasingly tyrannized by
information and images. The act of formulating and maintaining a personal philosophy is difficult.
I am longing for rest, in need of rejuvenation. This work is in reaction to my own wants - to slow down,
breathe, let go, recharge, and reconnect. |
