Turner Farms Cattle

Grazing Bull

The Turner Farms registered Angus cow herd was established in the 1960’s.  All of the cows on the farm today were born and bred here on the farm.  American Angus Association AHIR records have been utilized since the mid 1980’s.  The herd has always been maintained as a commercial herd, except that the cattle are registered.

The primary selection criteria is to demand that a cow produce a live calf on her own every year in a limited breeding season with feed inputs that are common for commercial cattlemen in South Carolina.  Producing a live calf on reasonable feed inputs is the most important thing for commercial producers and we feel that it should be for purebred breeders if they are selling bulls to commercial cattlemen.

Another important trait we have tried to select for is longevity.  Several home raised bulls have been used in the herd whose dams calved every year until the age of sixteen or more.  Growth and carcass quality are important considerations but we never forget reproduction and longevity as the cornerstones of the breeding program.  Cow and Calf

Since 2000, we have retained ownership of the majority of our bull calves; feeding them out in Iowa or here in Honea Path.  The feedback we have received is that we are producing cattle that perform in the pasture as well as in the feedlot and our freezer beef customers tell us they are great on the plate.

Artificial Insemination has been used for a number of years on a limited basis but we have found that quality bulls from like minded breeders and home raised bulls from cows which have proven themselves in our pastures are more affordable and reliable alternatives.

Bulls from the Nichols, Graham and Jorgensen programs or home-raised bulls with these bloodlines have been used almost exclusively for the last 20 years.  These three operations have been breeding Angus cattle using performance records since, or before, the American Angus Association started its’ AHIR record program and they have always been focused on producing bulls for the commercial cattleman, rather than chasing the always changing purebred fads.  Grazing Cattle

A limited number of registered bulls and females are for sale every year and since we feed and slaughter the majority of the bull calves, only the best are sold as breeding bulls.  They are developed primarily on grass and supplemented when grazing conditions are poor. The result is vigorous bulls that are ready to breed cows and which won’t fall apart when put out to pasture with cows.  Please call to discuss bulls and females which are available for sale.
