Local Pollen

We gather pollen in specially built traps that cause the pollen that the bees collect to fall from their legs when entering the hive. We then store it in the freezer rather than dry it. Pollen is what the bees feed their babies, and the traps have an open and shut position which is changed every few weeks so that they can get enough stored for their own use. Here is how pollen looks on the bee's legs.

Here is a picture of my 12 year old son Daniel harvesting the first pollen crop of the year, at the end of January 2003 in Arroyo Grande, California.

Some people think pollen helps with their allergies, while some others take is for vitamins and energy.
