LXML’S SWEET LIPS, GREYBEARD MEMORIAL DAY SHOOT

THE WEATHER WAS GREAT FOR THAT RANGE. IT WAS ONE OF THE FEW THAT I HAVE BEEN TO UP THERE THAT THE WEATHER WASN’T AN ISSUE. WE WERE ABLE TO SIT OUTSIDE AT NIGHT TO PARTY. NOT LAST SET UP HIS TELESCOPE ONE NIGHT, I WASN’T ABLE TO GO UP AND LOOK THRU IT. I HAD GOTTEN A PISTOL FROM 3 SHEETS AT OUR RONDY HAD NEVER SHOT IT, TIED WITH COLE HILL FOR SECOND WITH AN 11 OUT OF 18. THERE WAS A BBQ SATURDAY NIGHT, THE PEOPLE THAT OWN THE RANGE COOKED ALL THE FIXENS AND IT WAS REAL TASTY.

                                           CALIFORNIA TRAIL DAYS IN ELKO

IT WAS THE WEEKEND OF MAY 29, 30. PAT, LIN AND I, WENT OUT THERE ON THURSDAY TO SETUP. FRIDAY WAS BUSY FOR OUT THERE. MADE SOME FIRES WITH FLINT AND STEEL, FIRST FIRE I BURNT 6 HOLES IN MY SHIRT.THE  LAST FIRE I MADE, I BURNT MYSELF GOOD ENOUGH ON MY ARM TO GET A BLISTER, THE SIZE OF AN ERASER. WE HAD A COUPLE OF DEMONSTRATIONS, LOADING AND SHOOTING MUZZLELOADERS, I HAD MY SHOT GUN SO I MADE SOME NOISE.

FRIDAY NIGHT WE HAD A GUST OF WIND THAT LASTED 15 MINUTES, IT DUSTED THE WHOLE CAMP WITH ¼ INCH OF DUST, AND THE WHOLE CAMP WENT INSIDE TO USE THE FACILITIES TO WASH OUT THE DUST THAT GOT INTO EVERYTHING. SATRUDAY WAS GOOD, NO BURNS. WE GOT RAINED OUT OF OUR 4:30 LOADING AND SHOOTING DEMONSTRATION. AND THE SHOW WAS DONE AFTER THAT.

                                    VIRGINIA CITY SESQUINTENIAL

TONY AND I WENT UP TO VC TO CAMP AND SHOW OUR MOUNTAIN MAN SKILLS.

FRIDAY WE SETUP IN BETWEEN THE RAIN SHOWERS, WHEN IT WASN’T RAINING THE WIND WAS BLOWING, AND IT BLEW MOST OF THE NIGHT. I GOT UP SATURDAY, MADE A POT OF COFFEE, WAS DRINKING IT WHEN THE RAIN STARTED, IT LASTED ALL DAY LONG. TONY AND I SAT IN MY TRUCK WHEN IT WAS RAINING, WE HAD A FEW BRAVE SOLES WANDER DOWN TO OUR CAMPS. BUT MOSTLY WE SAT IN THE TRUCK. SUNDAY WAS A NICE BEAUTIFUL DAY, WE HAD A LOT OF PEOPLE COME INTO CAMP, MADE A DOZEN OR SO FIRES.  AROUND 11:30 JEN JACKSON FROM CHANNLE 2 NEWS CAME INTO CAMP. SHE WANTED TO INTERVIEW US AND LEARN OUR MOUNTAIN MAN SKILLS. SO WE SHOWED HER HOW TO, MAKE FIRE WITH FLINT AND STEEL, LOADING MUZZLELOADERS, AND TO THROW TOMAHAWKS.  WE WERE ABLE TO GET HER TO STICK IT, AND HER CAMERAPERSON MICHELE WAS ABLE TO THROW AND STICK IT. THEY WERE IN CAMP FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. THEY SHOWED PART OF THE INTERVIEW AND THROWING TOMAHAWKS ON THE NEWS AT 11:00pm.  THE REST OF THE DAY WAS HO HUM.

     CARSON CITY RENDEZVOUS

ALL 10 CAMPS SET UP ON THURDAY, WHICH IS OUR NORMAL CAMP SIZE. TRADERS ROW WAS SMALLER THAN NORMAL, WE ONLY HAD 7 TRADERS, WE USUALY HAVE 10.  WE HAD IT ALL SET UP AND READY TO GO AT NOON ON FRIDAY. EVEN WITH ME GETTING A FLAT TIRE WHEN I DROVE OVER THE COUNCIL FIRE PIT, IN FRONT OF THE HAWK ROUNDS. I TOOK THE PIT OUT OF THE TRUCK, BECAUSE IT WAS ON TOP OF THE HAWK ROUNDS, SET IT OFF TO THE SIDE, I TOLD RAY I WAS GOING TO RUN OVER IT. HE THOUGHT I WAS KIDDING (so was I) UNTIL I DID IT. WE HAD THE TIRE CHANGED AFTER A FEW MINUTES. ON SATURDAY GAIL BLACK CAME TO RENDEZVOUS, SHE HAD GIVEN ME DANA’S RIFLE EARLIER IN THE WEEK. WHILE GAIL WAS IN CAMP, SHE PRESENTED IT TO GABE, TO USE, AND WHEN HE GETS TO BIG TO USE IT HE WILL PASS IT ON. THE REST OF THE WEEKEND WENT OFF WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. STEVE AND BILL BROUGHT THEIR CANNONS, USED UP 22 POUNDS OF POWDER. ALL IN ALL IT WAS A GREAT WEEKEND.

Some Muzzleloading Safety Do's and Don'ts

DO’s

Read and understand your instruction manual. If you didn't get one with your muzzleloader, order one from the manufacturer. They will send you one for free. Many companies now have a web site and online manuals are common.

Wear shatterproof shooting glasses and ear protection, as both percussion and flintlock guns may shower sparks and bits of caps/flints when fired.

Treat a misfire or failure to fire as though the gun can fire at any second. Wait at least a minute with gun pointed at the target.

Be sure all spectators are completely behind you when firing. Flames and bits of caps/flint sometimes exit from the side of the gun. It is good shooting etiquette to warn other shooters that you are about to fire a flint lock next to them.

DO NOT

Never fire a muzzleloader unless the ball is firmly seated against the powder charge. Firing a muzzleloader with the ball off the powder or part way up the barrel may cause serious damage to the firearm and possibly serious injury to the shooter.

Do not exceed manufacturer's recommended maximum powder charge.

Never use FFFFg black powder for a charge in any muzzleloader at any time. The only safe use for fine priming powder is for the priming of a pan on a flint lock. Fine powders will cause excessive pressures and could very well burst your barrel.

Never lean over (or stand in front of) the muzzle at any time.

Never attempt to shoot out a projectile which is not firmly seated against the powder charge
