These are photographs taken on my August 2002 and August 2005 railfanning
trips to Oakridge.
Six
helpers roll back down hill toward Heather at the Fields "slide".
The
Union Pacific DDA40X "company special" just happened to be out in Oakridge
when I was there in 2002. It stopped over night and departed the next morning at 6
a.m.
Here
is a nice shot of an AC4400, the lead locomotive pulling a train up hill crossing the Salt
Creek trestle. You have to wait until late in the day, so that the sun is
at your back when taking this shot. It's a little scary standing by the
side of highway 58 waiting for the locomotives to pass onto the bridge.
There a quite a few trucks on this highway really moving at good speed.
Another
shot of a train on the Salt Creek trestle from Forest Road 5884. The trees
are growing too tall here and soon this view will be obscured.
This is the snow shed at tunnel 5, which is very impressive when
you see it up close.

A
train pokes its head out of tunnel 18 headed down hill towards Wicopee.
At
Wicopee there is a huge cut through some very brightly colored rocks. It
makes for a great picture taking spot. There is a trail leading over the
hill on the left side of the picture. There are excellent vantage points
on both sides of the hill.
This
picture has a great story behind it, which makes it all the more
interesting. I had been listening to the UP train crew of this locomotive
try to get one of the helpers back on line at Abernethy for almost two
hours. The last helper engine would not accept a load for some
reason. During this time, I was trying to find a road that could lead me
in to Abernethy. I was completely baffled on how to get to Abernethy.
After
giving up on going to Abernethy, I settled for waiting at the exit from tunnel 3
at Cascade Summit. Once the train crew got the helper engine back on line,
it could not be MUed with the lead locomotive. An engineer from the MOW
train was enlisted to help run the crippled helper locomotive conventionally,
using the radio to coordinate power settings between the head-end locomotive and
the helper. When they radioed that they were about to make their move, I
was waiting at this location. The train emerged from tunnel 3 in notch 5
going about 2 mph. What a sight! The smoke rolled out of the tunnel
for a few minutes.
