Library Construction Project Update August 2007

Back in July of 2005, we were approved for a State grant to build a new library facility in the Town of Upton, and it is time for an update on the project!

Where we are: Our architect provided a beautiful set of plans for a new library facility, and the Board of Library Commissioners approved our building program, awarding us a grant that will pay for 40% of the total cost.  These plans are available at the library, and we love to show them off, so talk to Matthew if you’d like to see the features and design of the new building.

What’s Next?  We are waiting for two events which should happen within the next 12 months.  First, we need the state legislature and Governor to fund the MBLC Library construction grant.  Second, the library site is part of a proposed Planned Village development on Maple Ave.  The developers of this site need to start their construction for the site to be useable.

How can I help?  Right now, you can contact your State Representatives, Senators and Governor Patrick and ask them to support library funding and bond bills for library construction.  In the future, you can be prepared to help with fund-raising efforts, and campaign for a “yes” vote when we ask the town to pass a debt override for the remaining 60% of the new building’s cost!
