The US Army
in the Civil War

   US Cavalry flag

[Dedicated in memory of PVT Matthias Seipp, Co. H, 44th Wisconsin Infantry
 and PVT Heinrich Koppenn, Co F, 12th Illinois Infantry
]

The failure of the Continental Fathers to abolish Slavery in the new Nation resulted in a bloody holocaust that took more than 600,000 American lives, left a large portion of battle survivors without an arm or leg and many more with, what we now call, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (resulting in some suicides which were never added to the number of war dead).

"It is Essential to Respect the Rights of Every Human Life!"

By the 1860's the Army had had nearly ninety years to become large and diversified. Enlisted rank insignia, too, had become large and diversified. Chevrons covered the entire outer sleeve, in dashing colors. The several branches of the Army had their respective jobs and used their troops in varying manners. The insignia show this.
