The US Army in the War of 1812 |
|
||
Great Britain's attempts to impose a blockade on Europe
during the Napoleonic Wars was a constant source of conflict with the
United States. The British had previously attacked the U.S.S.
Chesapeake and nearly caused a war two years earlier. Disputes
continued over the Northwest Territories and the border with Canada,
but the central dispute surrounded the impressment of merchant seamen,
American citizens,
by the Royal Navy.
As a result of these long simmering
disputes, the United States finally declared War on June 18, 1812.
The war concluded with the Treaty of
Ghent in 1814; restoring "status quo ante bellum" or "as things were
before the war".
