Custom Hidden Trailer Hitch

Okay, this is something I have wanted to do for a very long time.  First I wanted to do it on the Convert, but with the stock Corvair motor, it didn't leave much room for a hidden hitch.  And don't even get me started on the bumper or under the bumper permanent type hitches...Those I don't like, to say it nicely.  A year or two ago I bought a fairly universal class 1 type receiver type hitch rated to pull 2000 lbs with 200lbs tongue weight.  With the stock Corvair motor out of the way, I was able to mount the hidden hitch under the frame rails, and reinforce it to the stock engine mount area.  The instructions showed bolting it to various places on the frame, but I welded everything on, so it should be able to tow a little more than the capacity of it. (Should be able to flat tow another Corvair)  When  the hitch is out, all you see is a 3/4" X 2" hole, which I will fabricate some sort of a plug to hide it.  It is located under the bumper, so it isnt easily seen.  I will have to make a new reciever for it, one that lifts the ball height up to at least level with the bumper, or possibly even higher, as the car will  be about 2" lower than stock once I get my suspension where I want it.  Ok, enough typing, lets get to the pics!

Here is what I started with, a Hidden Hitch brand universal class 1 receiver.

I used 3/4" angle iron to weld the front of the hitch to the rearmost horizontal frame rail, opposite side of the motor mount.

Here it is pictured without the receiver in place.

Close up of what I have been talking about.

Here is inside the "engine compartment"  I used 2" angle iron to secure the rear of the hitch to the motor mount area.  I figure if the motor mount is designed to hold up 300-400 lbs, the hitch should be fine there.

Shooting the photo downward on the angle iron mentioned above.

Here is what it looks like with the rear grill in place.  This grill is only for fabrication and mockup.  Everything fits nicely.

Another View.

Bumper in place, you can see that it is quite low, but a new receiver with a 4-5" raise in it should bring the ball up to where it needs to be.

A small hardly noticeable hole is left when the reciever comes out.  The hitch came with a small black plug to fit this hole, which will match the future black color of the car perfectly.  Hidden!
