A little history of the 1978 Silver Anniversary Corvette

1978 was the 25th year of production for the Corvette, and it was honored as the Pace Car at the 62nd running of the Indianapolis 500. To celebrate the occasion, Chevrolet redesigned the car, featuring a new instrument panel and a fastback-style rear glass, giving the Corvette interior more of a "cockpit" look and feel. The original design called for the rear glass to open like a hatchback, but budget cuts within GM killed this feature.

Two special edition Corvettes were offered that year, one being the limited "Pace Car" edition, of which only 6,502 were produced. The second was the Silver Anniversary Paint package, of which 15,283 were made--a full one-third of total Corvette production for the year, which was 46,776 including the Pace Cars. This special option, code B2Z, cost $399.00 over the base price and fitted the car in styling chief Bill Mitchell‚ A favorite combination of two-tone silver--light on top and darker on bottom. Many Corvette fans consider this one of the best looking 'Vettes of all time.

All model year 1978 Corvettes sported the 25th Anniversary emblems on the nose and rear fuel cover.
